Saginaw PS mod works
« on: July 09, 2016 - 01:37:32 PM »
Two things came together.  As these things often begin, it started with a minor power steering pump leak which was decorating the entire drivers side under the hood with a lightly fogged layer of what-the-heck-is-that.  And the good luck side was running across the Mopar Action article.  I may be late to the party, but this was new to me...  The valve mod in the article adds a couple shims to the valve, which reduces the output pressure, in effect tightening up the feel at the steering wheel.  Who knew!  :grinno:  Finding the right washers to use as shims is a bit tricky, but what I found and used worked really well.  I'm not sure of the effect on fluid temp, but my thought (blind hope?) is that lower pressure would equate to a lower temp.  Anyway, if this is old news to the gang here, OK, I'm just confirming this did exactly what I wanted.  I got a late Saginaw reman pump from O'Reilly's for $47 bucks, got the washers and I now have a noticeably firmer feel on a Tuff Wheel.  The Challenger is smoother in curves and better behaved through my favorite curved road that I use for my 20 mile check-out runs.  This is a cheap quick mod with a nice result.

The article:  http://www.moparaction.com/Tech/beep/PUMP_IT_DOWN-re-v1.4.pdf
Where they show a pic of the valve and the two shims, those are the shims they added to the valve.

The shim washer:  I tried cutting down a brass washer, but had no luck getting it in proper shape, too soft to work with for the dimensions.   Here is the washer I used for the shim - AMPG part number B004K1FG1S.  I got mine off EBay (bag of 100 for about $15).  I used two of them. The article says you can stack more or less to get the degree of firmness feel you want.  I'm pleased with two shims.  Sorry, but I didn't think to take pics, see the article for theirs.  Firm really is better.   :screwy:

Certainly.  I'll be glad to mail some to anyone else.  Don't worry about a fee, just send me your info.  I'll send you 5 so you have plenty, and for replacing the one that rolls under the workbench.

PM sent, thanks a ton! I've wanted to do this and plan on doing a before and after experience on this.

This should help with the rear end fishtailing on hard shifts.

Update.   Look what you started Bullit -  -  I've been dolling them out like Halloween candy.  Must have been a bag of 50 instead of 100...   I can still send 3 washers each to 3 more guys, if anybody wants to try them.  3 should do it (read the full post and article)  and more guys get parts that way.

If you'll be getting yours in the mail - please understand I have only about 20 miles on this mod, and I can't predict the effects in heat or wear on the pump.  The washer is not an exact diameter match, but it fits the valve pretty nicely and the pressure valve is doing exactly what the article says it should do.  Your mileage may vary, etc.

Please let us know how this works for yours.

Just did mine last week! Google Borgeson 899001 for a neat kit of the correct shims, new O ring. and a neat valve holding tool. Got it from Summit about $22.

That looks good, with instructions.  Doesn't say Mopar, so maybe the search didn't work on my computer.  Good share!

I finally parked my car long enough to install the washers (shims) in my power steering pump. SUCCESS!!! I used two of them and that seems to be the right amount of firmness........doesn't feel like I'm driving in a swimming pool any longer. The only thing that seems a little weird, but will be easily fixed is when the rpm's are under about 800 it turns to pretty much manual steering. Think I'll just bump up the idle to about 900 and it should be great.
Thanks dsburch for the washers and the article, makes the car much nicer to drive. WooHoo

Looking for those AMPG part number B004K1FG1S washers and don't seem to find them.   Send a link if you find them.
Here is the AMPG catalog and I don't see that part #.

Here's the only question I have: if doing this upgrade on the car how much PS fluid dumps out when taking out the valve?
