Hemi 472 oil pan questions (Milodon vs Stock).
« on: July 11, 2016 - 01:43:31 AM »
Hey there,

I have a 1971 Challenger that I put a 472 Hemi crate motor in.  The motor has been running fantastic, dual quad/crossram, custom headers, etc.

The issue I'm having is, my Milidon pan is too low for any kind of bump in road that is bigger then normal. In normal driving, I'm fine, but a decent up-down bump, and I'm scrapping the pan, so much that I knocked a whole in it the other day.

I don't race the car, but when I was installing the motor, I was being helped by a guy that kind of had drag racing on the mind, and felt that the stock HEMI oiling system is not up to par.

I have the stock pan/oil pump, etc, and am considering putting it back on to gain the ground clearance. Below is the pan I have....any input is awesome.

So, for those of you with a Gen II Hemi, and run the car hard, are you running the stock pan and oil pump without issue?

Here is the car....

And motor (wasn't complete in pic, but close)

Milodon offers a few different pans for the Chrysler big block/Hemi that fit an E body... You obviously got the deep drag race pan... Poor choice for a street driven car...
They offer 30761 which is a reproduction of the original Hemi pan thats a higher quality piece than the OE pan, It's great for most street applications

Theres also the    31580 & 31581 which are 7 qt road race oil pans, spendy but they keep oil going to your engine under extreme conditions....

the road race pan is awesome  , shallow but large capacity & wider not deeper & has baffles to keep the oil at the pick up

I see guys use the stock pan all the time. Myself I won't take a chance. No mention of your camshaft but I would personally set a limit of 6,000RPM using a stock Hemi oil pan.

I use a high pressure oil pump instead of high volume. It's what the machinist recommended.

Oil pressure seems fine even at higher RPM's.

the more oil in your pan, engine will last longer, due to
running cooler, and having cleaner oil.

using a piece of sheet metal profiled very close to the crank on the right side of the engine the metal will cut excess oil from the crank , it is simple to make & highly effective & can pinch in with the windgae tray along the oil pan bolts

Can you elaborate?

not really, other than the scraper takes excess oil off of the crank, that would other wise stay
out of the oil pan sump.

Crank scrapers are rarely used on anything less than a race motor....  If you don't spend the time to get it fit tight to the crank throws it doesn't do anything.. If you fail to give it enough clearance metal to metal contact means bad things are gonna happen..  Go over to Class racer & read about fitting, most guys say 3-5 hours to fit one.. Some guys spend upwards of 10-12 hours... And on a Dyno it might show 5-6 HP above 6,000 rpms... For a street car... I'll pass.. :2cents:

Put a Milodon Road Race pan on it & be done with it.. :2cents:

I have a windage tray on my motor.  Guess that's another name for crank scraper,
or are they different?
