HELP Pertronix 1381A install
« on: July 13, 2016 - 01:16:01 PM »
I need help installing my pertronix ignition. I have a 73 Cuda and the previous owner installed a 66 383 in the car. While doing so they hacked up the engine harness to make it work with the points ignition. The problem that I have is I'm not sure if Im supposed to use the ECU and voltage regulator with the pertronix 1381A? Also the the pertronix instructions give 2 options for installation, one through a ballast and one without the ballast? I believe that I read somewhere that if the coil puts out more then 1.5 ohms your supposed to use a ballast. The coil is a Echlin IC-17, and can't find any specs on how many ohms it puts out. Does anyone know it's specs? If it does and I have to use the ballast then does the ignition hot plug into the bottom of the ballast and red wire from the pertronix to the top or vise versa, or does it matter? Heres a pic of the Pertronix instructions, I don't think the 1st one applies.

I would use the ballast , Make Sure you do not power the pertronics from the + coil terminal though this will kill it . You have to wire the Pertronis to 12v Before the ballast . the voltage reg is still needed , it has the 2 pin plug on the firewall , the ECU in Not needed with the 5 pin plug , the Pertronics looks after what the ECU does .
 So I would use #3

What end of the ballast do I plug the 12v power into and what end do I hook the pertronix red wire to, or does it matter just as long as they're on opposite ends?

What is ignition 1 and ignition 2? Also looks like there's only a negative wire coming out of Dist, so where would the red wire from the pertronix hook?

the ballast doesn't care so the brown wire to the coil is at either end & the blue 12v feed is at the other .
Ign 1  & Ign 2 are run & start . the brown start wire bypasses the ballast for starting

When u say brown wire to the coil are u referring to the brown wire that comes from the ECU? Also where should the red wire from the pertronix hook to?

The single plug actually has a blue wire and two brown wires hooked to it. The other end of the blue wire on the single plug goes to the positive side of the coil. The dual plug has a blue wire that comes out of the harness and a black wire that loops back to itself. I believe both plugs are hot when the ignition is on.

OK
so the dual plug should be 12v in run position & the other plug with 2 brown wires should only be powered with the key in start position , the second blue wire with the 2 brown wires should not be there but you can connect that directly to the red pertronics wire if is it 12v feed in the run position

Okay so the single at one end of the ballast and the dual at the other end? As long as the single is hot in the start position? Do I have this correct?

I just finally got mine wired correctly and running today, Revnnator with new electronic Accell distributor and I have a lot of extra wires.
I think you have the double plug with the protrusion that fits in the ballast resistor notch, that plug may have two brown and a dark green with red wire. One of the brown goes to + coil, the dark green red goes to ignition switch.
Should be a single blue wire, I put that on the other end from the notch same side as the double brown , that is the 1.2 ohm long side.
I put what I think is the hot wire for the Revnnator in the jumper wire to connect with the single blue wire on the ballast resistor. Maybe that terminal is where your hot wire goes.
I will upload a photo shortly of my wiring at the BR.

Yup but you mat need to remove the blue wire attached to the brown wires if it is 12 v powered too
