Did you install felt or something to cover the shiny stuff?

No, you can't see any of the shiny stuff once the console is in the car.

Now that I've been driving the car for a few weeks I can't believe how much of a difference putting the sound deadening on the console has made. I have next to no squeaks and rattles. Even going over bumps it almost sounds like a modern car. And the feel of the console is so much more solid. I have to say that this simple mod made one of the most noticeable differences in lack of sound. Well worth it.

What kind of sound deadener did you go with?  And was it self stick?

It was a Dynamat knock off I got on eBay pretty cheap. Yes it was self stick. I took the console out of the car, turned it upside down and pretty much lined the whole underneath with it.
