Center console rattling
« on: July 14, 2016 - 08:21:36 AM »
My center console always rattles and creeks when I drive. I've already put sound deadener around the interior which help a lot. I was thinking of doing the same to the underside surfaces of the console and lid. Has anyone done that and did it help?

Mine rattles too, especially at idle.  I tried a thin piece of foam cushion under part of the woodgrain near the lid and it did not help at all.  I'm interested what everyone else has tried.

Those are good ideas, but thinking more of the whole console. Being made of plastic the console itself has a hollow sound to it when you tap on it with your knuckles . I wanted to take the console out, turn it upside down and apply some sound deadening material all over the back side of the console.

That sounds like a good idea.  I think there are some thinner DynaMat type products that would do the job.  You wouldn't need it very thick(or want it very heavy).  Just enough to add some strength to the plastic.

You could also insulate where the console meets the body.  Putting a piece of thin rubber between the body and the console might absorb some movement.  I had to add washers(don't know why) to get the console up high enough to mount cleanly on the chrome shifter plate.  It rattles a lot at idle.   I need to remove those washers and make a wider spacer out of aluminum so there is more surface area supporting the console.

Following along, mine has an annoying rattle also.
Hard to isolate but it seems like the lid is the major problem bouncing around.

Maybe coat the latch bracket with plasti-dip to make it slightly larger?  That might tighten up the lid?

My lid was making my noise. That is why I added the liner. This gives it just a bit of snugness when closed and keeps it from ratting since it is resting on the material rather than the bald plastic bottom.

The lip is defiantly a problem I can fix that. It's the whole structure that's cheap and hollow sounding. I guess I'll be the guinea pig and try putting some sound deadening underneath. I'll let everyone know what happens.

I was shocked at how heavy my A-body console is.  It's a night and day difference.  Thick fiberglass body and three separate metal top plates.  Actually, I was shocked at how many extra fasteners the entire car had compared to my Challenger.

Don't recall how it is bolted down but I would put a washer ( poly or rubber washer) spacer on the mounting bracket to fill in the space that is
causing the consol to rattle.

I've noticed that there are several areas that can rattle. I've had pretty good luck isolating the rattles by pressing down on different spots on the console when I hear it. Here are the spots that I've noticed that can rattle: (a) between the console door and the opening, (b) between the woodgrain plate and the top half of the console body, (c) between the top and bottom halves of the console body.
For (a), I did the following: applied thin (about 3/32 in. wide) , foam weatherstrip around the edges of the console door opening. For (b), I glued thin foam sheet (about 1/16 in. thick, comes in rolls and used to protect glassware when moving) to underside of woodgrain plate. Haven't had to do anything for (c) yet.
Hope this helps.

This is what I had in mind. The console is much more solid sounding. Seems to work.
