No spark help!!
« on: July 23, 2016 - 09:57:45 PM »
I recently converted my ignition system to hei ignition and I hooked up both ignition wires and everything else properly but I am not getting any spark from the coil. Any advice would be appreciated my real concern is how to wire up the alternator with out the ballast resistor there anymore?

the alt should not be affected the blue wire feeds the plug at the ballast & continues to the alt field feed wether it is plugged into a ballast or not .
SO WHy HEI , the limited rpm capability in GMs & were terrible for reliability with the wires breaking & the modules failing ?

I did the swap for simplicity and reliability. The original harness I have on here now is a mangelled mess. I hooked up the dark blue ignition wire along with other brown ignition wire and have had no luck.

Do you have 12volts to the blue (run) & brown (start) wires?... is the module grounded?

What is the advantage of converting to HEI?

cheap - about $20-25 although you probably want one of the higher priced performance pieces
simplifies the wiring and you run 12 volts, no ballast which allows the use of the no oil coils
small and unobtrusive which would be good on a non OE electronic model.
any decent parts store will have one in stock

I got her all fixed up! Just was a loose connection. She sounds a lot healthier! Thanks for the help!

Hmm.  I was doing a little googling and it seems stock type hei systems start dropping sparks after 4500rpm. Doesn't seem like an upgrade to me.  :2cents:
