Trunk sheet metal work quality
« on: July 28, 2016 - 04:59:46 PM »
Hi everyone.  I'm looking at this vehicle and here are a few picks of the trunk.  Quarters were replaced.  What do you think of the quality of the work?

It looks better than mine, they overlaped so much on my car so I can get my finger under the edge. I will redo my quarters later.

First off Is this a  $20 k driver  or an alegedly $$$ show car ?

Not to start the flange or no flange  argument , this is a correct looking flanged panel joint . imo

It look like whom ever did the work took attention to detail in sealing the joint end and getting it cut straight.

Is it a car show winning repair no.  But at least it's not hidden  totally hack repair that will show its ugly head.

They. Seem to have taken some attention to detail ,  except for the tape  holding the lug wrench to the jack.

The only thing that is an unknown is if the flange joint was assembled correctly  weld thru primer behind and  stitch welded correctly .  Only the one who did the work knows .

Lately I'm trying really hard to only say positives things.  I see you're from Palm Springs.  Very nice area down there!
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

The car is not "restored", it is "fixed up". From these shots I see a $20k car. The lap joint is so-so and I wouldn't be happy with it but what else really bothers me is the prep on the floor and wheelhouses. It's a "spray bomb resto" and that's okay if the guy wants $20k for it and the rest of the car is okay. Let me guess though, he believes it is worth $55k?

How did I guess? Actually being a rag top I raise my value somewhat on this one to maybe $40k? Only after a close personal inspection though. I would expect the paint to start bubbling and lifting within a year or two based on the "speedy" prep work that is obvious. So you would have to look at the car closely to see if you could live with it and also how much would be involved in making the car right. It might be fine to drive for a few years and sell before doing a major on it. There is a lot of car there alright it just would be a shame to pay big bucks for it only to have to spend $30k within a few years to repair the quarters, probably the trunk floor and other parts and repaint it after pulling it all apart. A close look at the floors and frame rails from both sides would tell you what you need to know. JMHO.

Is that being sold by "Southern Motors"?  If it is, do yourself a favor and do a little more research on the seller.  I'm not passing judgment on the seller, I'm just suggesting that you know who you are buying from.

Maybe it is just me but don't the front fenders look to be a shade or two lighter than the doors?

Yes, I read whole threads on the seller.

As of right now, the car has a deposit at an agreed price of 59.5K.  Sold in less than a week.
