Has anyone used American AutoWire, I need help
« on: August 03, 2016 - 05:09:16 PM »
Ok, before you tell me to just call American Autowire tech, I have already been there and Dave has been a huge help, but I want a second opinion on one thing.  Here is my situation.
I am using AAW's Classic Update Kit on my 'Cuda which has a stock 340. I have a Standard ECU unit so no points.  There is a double ballast resistor and Dave says since I have I should keep it.  He has given me a revised schmatic for wiring everything and I am feeling pretty good at this point but,  I have read where if you have points you need the ballast resistor, if you don't you don't need it.  I have already removed the external voltage regulator since I am changing to an internal regulated alternator and I am all for cleaning up the firewall of anything I don't absolutely need.

Has anyone used the AAW kit with a similar setup as mine?  If so, what did  you do with the Ballast Resistor?

Thanks for your input in advance.

Cheers!

The ballast resistor is there to knock down the voltage that the coil had to put up with back in the day.

At startup it got 12V to crank then dropped down to like 8-9V.

Cannot answer your VR question as I don't know much about AAW kit, but it makes sense if you have an alternator with an internal regulator.

as long as you run a OEM style Ign.  ..with Ignition box... (orange or chrome ) you need the BR !  But if you decide to go for a  MSD RTR  or a Pertronix Standalone Distributor..you don´t need the BR  BUT you need a 0.6-0.7 OHM coil   also  without a seperate BR

Thanks for the help guys. For anyone interested, I have made a new AAW engine sheet that is modified per Dave's instructions. I sent to him last night  for his review and he said it looked great.
After I have completed my wiring and find everything to be correct, I'll post a copy here for anyone else doing this modification.

Cheers!
