Lol....you read my mind.

My thought was if the new switch results in a light when not running and no light when running we would be ok?

I did pick up a oil tester gauge when I was out today.....in case it went beyond the switch.

Was planning on having the son swap the switch out and see what happens then go from there. ...it's his car and he has time tomorrow where as i dont..   

But I guess it does make sense to put the Guage on there and see what it reads....

So I should be running 20w50?  Book calls for 10w30 doesn't it?

A friend told me the same thing for my cudas 318....I have run 10w30 for 6 years I have had it. ...

I would defiantly change to 20/50 especially in the summer months.   I run 20/50 in my 340 here in FL all year long

I already told you to run 20w-50...or you can just wait until it blows up.

Dangit--- the son just tried swapping the switch and no change.

He tried threading in the adaptor from the HB oil gauge tester kit and got skeered cause its very snug and he is afraid of stripping threads (newbie)...

I guess i know what I will be doing when I go home today.

Had the boy pull the switch and crank/start the engine briefly......no oil came out.

Next step is to pull the relief valve and pray the spring is broke or that the valve is clogged.....

Son pulled the relief valve.....said that the spring looks ok, but the piston seemed to hang a little coming out....and it has what he calls corrosion on it that looks like it was in one spot a while.....

He said that when he got the piston out, some oil came out thru the oil switch hole where none had been before....

That all seems to indicate that maybe the pressure relief valve was stuck open?

Gonna stop for some crocus cloth on the way home to polish it and pray that it helps.  Can I also polish the BORE of the pump without worry with it on the engine??

The worrying part is that he also said that he seems to see what he calls metal flake in the little bit of oil that came out.....not sure if its his inexperience saying that or if it really has metal in it.....hoping the bearings didnt start to toast.

buy a ball type brae cylinder hone and use that.

clean the entire pump.

run the hone in the bore with ed40 for around 10 seconds.

lightly sand the piston with wd40 and 1200.

clean, lube and reinstall pump.

run a magnet thru the oil to see it there is steel in it.

look at it in the sunlight to see if it has rainbows in it . if it does but there is no steel, that is aluminum

of course the bearings are toast, that is why it has low oil pressure at low rom and why you should run thicker oil until it grenades.

Well me and the son  looked at this again together.   

I dont think *I* see metal....some very very fine particulates maybe?  Dont seem to be magnetic.  Aluminum?  But EXTREMELY fine....and I am not convinced that stuff wasnt in the pan already.

We pulled the relief valve and used crocus cloth on the "piston" ...no major scoring or corrosion.....used a bore scope to peak at the hole a bit.....tough to see but to me it looks fine in there......

Put it together and put the oil pressure gauge on it....ZERO...NADA ZILCH.  None at cranking , running at high idle or low.

Not even any oil in the hose/fitting of the gauge......when you disassemble it all again oil DOES drip out a drop every minute or so........but clearly we have no oil flow.

The oil level is overfilled by about a quart I would say.......above the "full mark" by the same distance as between the "fill" and "full" marks.....which is weird because he put in 5 quarts just like the book says.   One quart extra wouldnt cause the pump to fail would it?

So now we are down to either a bad pump, bad gear on the pump or cam, or clogged pickup/pickup sucking air.  None of those jobs are fun.

That damn pump hangs off the side the way it does and looks like it would come out but I know it wont without lifting the engine....

We had done motor mounts a couple months back and had jacked the engine up from the bottom to do that,......   But not sure I can see doing THAT to change the oil pump......seems like the jack would block access.    We didnt have to disconnect anything when we did that as far as rad hoses, exhaust etc.....I assume we would have to disconnect all that to get the engine to lift high enough to clear the pump?

Engine hoist I guess?  Even then the legs will be under the front of the car.....

And removing the pan looks like a royal PITA........center link, exhaust has to come out, probably STILL have to lift the motor, right?

So what would you all do at this juncture?

Took the filter off altogether and started engine briefly....nonflow at all.

Have you ever pulled the valve cover? I've heard of some slants sludgeing up. Pulling the valve cover might tell you something about the engines condition.

Didn't pull the cover but I did peer in thru the oil fill hole.....doesn't look all gunk ed up to me.....

Can you remove the oil pump cover and see if the rotor is turning while the engine is cranking? The drive gear may have worn out or spun on the shaft.

My son had suggested that.....I discarded the idea figuring that all that would do is complicate things. ......if it WASN'T turning then yeah it would indicate a busted gear. ....but if it WAS turning all it would indicate is that the gear is ok but the pump is bad...so either way you have to replace the pump before anything else which is where we are now already......   found a good article on slant 6 oil pump wear....it says that if yiu pull the distributer yiu can inspect the cam gear that drives the pump. .....    http://www.slantsix.org/articles/oil-pump-gear/failure-fix-report.htm.       as far down the side of the engine as the dizzy is, not sure how that would be possible.....I was tempted to look but figure removing the dizzy at this stage just in its more room for error....so gonna wait till the pump arrives and just swap it out i guess and pray.
