oil goes through the pick up into the pump & out through the filter so the filter is under pressure

Thanks cp.....

I was able to peel the squished metal off the oil pump part.....nonmagnetic....so I assume it's bearing material.   :-[

I suppose it would have been a small particle, and it smashed to the bigger footprint?

We opened up the oil filter that was on it when we bought the car and also the one we installed with our first oil change.....metal pieces on both......I guess there is no ppint to dropping the pan just to clean it out......

This is the original filter which we were driving on for a month or so......

And this is the one we put in at our first oil change and drove b on about 5 days before the pump siezed....

Well me and Tyler have been mulling those questions.....

Having this one redone (if its not too far trashed) would be the preferred route.....and hopefully the least expensive...maybe go a little oversized and tweak it a little.....?

A cousin of mine has a 1978 318 out of a truck that has 109k miles on it.....he says it ran good before getting yanked (the truck was being parted out)...that would mean a bunch of rework to exhaust, maybe trans, etc....not sure what trans we have in the Volare and if it will bolt right up to the 318 or not?  He says we can have it free.....of course to adapt it in wont be free.   Tyler is a new driver.....turning 17 in a couple weeks.    He just got his first job....he is a responsible kiddo so far.....but hard to get in much trouble with a slant 6...plus the issue of gas mileage....if he cant afford to drive the car with the 8 in it, that will be rough......it will be his daily driver.  I know the 78 318 wasnt a powerhouse.....but moreso than the /6. And we dont really know what shape the free engine is in other than "it ran fine".    So did our current engine when we bought it two months ago....LOL

Not sure which would be less pricey at the end of the day.

A reman engine from advanced auto is $2,000.   I suppose a rebuild will be just as pricey?

There is also the issue of emissions inspections.....where we live its a visual.....in other words if the car is supposed to have a cat and airpump and all the emmssions crap it wont pass without it.....that is easier to keep in place with the current engine.

I am so bummed out.....I thought that the slant 6 was "bulletproof".....I was hoping that we could have smooth sailing at least until next spring.....so much for that huh? LOL

It sounded fine before, and that is why I was surprised when we opened up the first filter.....that is a lot of metal in there......we were gonna throw the new pump on and see what happens, but that's just kicking the can down the road.....there has to be a spun bearing......and it will grenade, and I dont want it to happen to the kid in the middle of winter etc.

Sorry for the long post.....just at a crossroads and I dont do well with crossroads....LOL

Trans will not work , a V8 will not bolt to it ,  neither will the mounts , finding a decent running  slant would be the easiest route . you could rebuild the one from the car over time while the replacement engine is in there .
The head can be milled .100 to increase compression  & ported & use the super 6 2bbl intake with a Holley 2bbl carb & the engine will make a lot better power & milage

Schumaker makes a mount conversion kit.....but the transmission issue would obviously another expense......

I am liking the idea of tweaking the slant 6...

Near Pittsburgh.

I found a 71 slant 6 on craigslist for $500 but without knowing the owner I wouldnt be too comfortable with anything from craigslist......could be exchanging one bad engine for another.

The 71 slant would be a good one to build eariler ones are btter for sure but it leaves with nothing to drive while you build it

As many /6's as were built & as many as have been set aside either for a V8 swap or because the car rusted away & the engine still ran great you shouldn't need to pay anywhere near $500....  Maybe $150 or less....  If you could get a year out of a $150 engine it would allow you to have a running driving car while you either build the original engine or you might find a fairly fresh slanty needing a home.... I know of one if you were closer but coast to coast isn't worth it...

I agree, but finding a slant 6 that is really in great shape is the key.....dont have the time or patience to install a $200 engine that blows up again in 3 months either......

Autozone sells reman engines with 3 years of warranty for $1700......One company sells Jasper engines online for $2100.....Advance sells their brand engines for $2,000.

Sucks spending that kind of money though at least it would be relatively sure that the engine is in great shape to start with.

But yeah if I could find a used one with lower miles or rebuilt that I KNEW was good, for a low price I would probably jump at it.

Though swapping in a 318 would be fun too...LOL....but not all that practical for my son.
