That sucks. Advertise for one? Maybe you will find someone who has one tucked away that will sell for cheap and know the full history of the engine.

Hopefully you can find one. I have personally thrown quite a few good ones away as there pretty much is no demand for them. Best case would be to find a super rusty but complete car or pickup/van where you could hear the engine running.

there were a lot of differences in the slant , the early ones had all solid flat tappet cams with adjustable rocker arms these were the best , around 82 they went to hyd lifters this was a big hassle especially if you mill the head .100 ,,, the oiling was all modified as there is no oil passage to the lifters in the slant it just gravity fed coming off the head to keep the solid lifters oiled , the later slant pressurized the rocker shaft but added hollow pushrods & down fed oil into the lifters , there is also a change in the head . pre 80 would be my choice .
swapping in a running slant as long as you can test the oil pressure should be fine for a year or two it is not common for these to have problems , I have hot rodded 4-5 of the slants without ever taking the bottom end apart , just ported & milled heads with better intakes carbs & sometimes headers & cams they have all been fine , , they respond very well , mine when stock was barely able to pass @ 70 MPH on the highway , it was a D100 pick up with the 833 OD  , after milling & porting the head , adding the 2 bbl intake & Holley carb so I could tune it & still having stock exhaust & manifold as well as a 150k mile bottom end  it had no problem passing on the highway even up to 90 MPH , I drove it year round , put over 80,000 more miles on it .
We built another one the same way but used the Hyper Pak ram intake with a 390 cfm 4 bbl & headers & new cam ,, it flew in a 65 Valiant
we actually built a 225 & installed a Tbird super charger & multi port EFI on a 60 Dodge Phoenix , this was the most powerful slant I had anything to do with , it pulled very decent #s on the dyno .
Reworked one in a 74 Dart sport too , head , cam , 4bbl Clifford intake split headers etc
I really like the 225 alum intake with the Holley 500 fm 2bbl , next choice is the Holley 390 cfm 4 bbl with the Clifford intake , the Hyper is just too cold for year round use , there is Zero heat to the carb but with EFI that would be the intake I would use by far !

I'm sorry for you as this turns out! Which way to go is up to you i guess... Spartan engine and ATK seam to be the same recon company. I have had no issues with ATK recon engines, they build a good product at a reasonable price. If you decide to rebuild the S6 yourself, here is a crank i found quickly on eBay:

I am liking the idea of tweaking the slant 6...

the more money you spend the faster it will go . you can pt a better exhaust and increase the compression to get a little more out of it or build a stroker.

So here is what will probably seem like a dumb question......but please bear with me. Lol

The car is sitting in our driveway, which has some incline to it, inclined down to the street.....front end up on ramps, facing the street.

I know ideally you want to do work like pulling an engine on a perfectly flat smooth surface.....but the ceiling in my garage is too low to allow room for the engine hoist i think. Not to mention that we would have to start it up to get it turned around and relocated into my garage....which will just damage stuff more.

Would I be crazy to consider pulling the engine in my driveway?

Anything is possible. I hope you have really good wheel chocks for a start. Then you will be working against gravity pulling the engine forward too.

Small bites. You know it has to come out. Pull it, pull the pan and check for damage. No expense yet. Maybe you caught it in time. New bearings, pan gasket, seals and back in the car. Not expensive at all. May buy you some time, to save for a replacement. This is how I would proceed.  :2cents:

We started pulling it today.....we have the majority of stuff pulled off....

We have the intake and exhaust left to pull and then the tranny lines, the we can pull the engine. Gonna leave the trans in the car.

You can leave the intake & exhaust on... Just disconnect the exhaust pipe....   Careful of the wiring on the firewall, 6 cylinders are longer than V8's & tend to catch stuff on the firewall...

Figured  that the manifolds have to come off anyways....plus that would be less weight to have to wrestle around with on the hoist maybe????....have to look at how the intake and exhaust manifolds seperate.....never did one of these....

Intake & exhaust come off together using common bolts , they separate once they are off if you feel the need to do that
