    Old hotrodder trick, Mount a flat bracket off one of the pivot bolts, from that add a bolt that rides just above the loose area of the belt....  Now where you rev the engine & the belt starts fluttering it will contact the bolt & the bolt stabilizes the belt...  I've used this old trick dozens of times & it's never failed me....  :2cents:

    I checked my belts today (440-6 with air) and i am running a GATES 7460XL belt on the power steering/water pump and it is slightly above the pulley, no rolling over problem., 2500 miles on it. I have a Federal PS pump not the Saginaw but it shouldn't matter. Are you using factory pulleys? I am not having the narrow belt roll over  problem. Maybe the Autozone belts are not the way to go? NAPA sells rebranded GATES belts in my area any way (NY).  It might be worth checking out instead of moving to a wider AZ belt (looks like a DAYCO "Top Cog" pos  belt)...

    Thanks for all the help.

    Got it fixed :bigsmile:   Had to use a DAYCO 15470 top cog belt.  Just drove it 10 miles and got on it a few times and the belt stayed on with the same tension.

    These DAYCO top cog belts are .440 wide at the top and it sit higher in the pulley.

    The Gates belts and the others I tried were .410 wide, even though they have the same part number.

    Waiting on belts from rockauto to do my AC belts also.

    When I was in Autozone I asked the sales guy if they had the same V belt as this one I was showing him, except I needed the cogs on the top.   He told me just to flip the belt over :screwy: :rofl: :roflsmiley:

    In these pics you can see the belt is now higher than edge of the pulley.

    what belt tension did you set.
    suppose to have 1/2 inch play in the center

    72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

    1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

    Yes,   about 1/2 inch    maybe a little less 3/8,  as I thought the belt would stretch a little.

    Just that .030 wider belt lets it ride on the sides of the pulley rather than the bottom and so far has made the difference of it coming off. 

     .410 top width compared to .440 top width,

    seems a tad tight, but probably ok. Just don't want to hurt
    any pulley bearings.

    Just put 10 miles on it and the tension now is 1/2 inch so I think I'm good.  Thanks for the input
