Replaced Exhaust, 70 Challenger 318
« on: August 17, 2016 - 08:36:29 PM »
Purchased a 318 exhaust from Ebay in 2015 for $315, plus shipping. Seller was sat1966.

My old exhaust was decrepit, to say the least. See the pics for the Diet Dr. Pepper and radiator hose clamp "fix" someone performed.

Clamps were not included, so I supplied new (except for the hanger before the axle). I had to cut off the old hanger mount from the muffler and have my neighbor weld it to my new muffler. I also had to radius cut the tail pipe to clear the rear valance, and had to use longer bolts for the manifold (since the replacement exhaust had thicker flanges). Special thanks to Chrysler for putting those retainer clips on the manifold bolt heads; those did not get re-installed. Anyways, the install was pretty easy. I have a new vs. old comparison photo attached, as well as a shot of the tailpipe after trimming.

Sounds so much better, and I probably shaved 25 pounds in accumulated lead build-up.

Congrats on the updated exhaust system! Looks like you eliminated a few 'restrictions' with the update... I'll bet the 318 breathes a bit easier now!  8 )

Very smooth. It took some time to re-calibrate my sense of RPM to motor sound.

It looks like the over diff bend was not very accurate & pushed the muffler back a few inches .
Glad you made it fit OK  :2thumbs:

I forgot to mention that part... we had to modify the over diff section because it was kicking the muffler into the fuel tank. Made a small cut, bent, and welded to realign. It really helps having a neighbor who can weld!

The tailpipe piece added about an inch over the previous length, so all in all, not bad.
