    Big update! Still won't run!!! suspect primary side bowl float and seat. Although
    I inspected closely, and the valve seat was a couple years old. And did not detect any
    leak in the float. But Holley thought vacuum leak or too much fuel, from perhaps a leaking
    power valve. But power valves and metering blocks are new.
    Will report back, after changing primary float and seat.

    to make sure, changed 180 rotation on dist, but just got a big backfire,
    so that ain't it. Hope it didn't blow a power valve.

    Primary bowl had no gas indication in sight viewing hole, but when unscrewed
    lock bolt on needle/seat assembly, got pressurized gas out.  Replaced float needle seat assembly, ran
    a tad better, but will now replace float with a new Holley plastic one.

    well, new float on primary side,
    but car still will not run.
    Time to start over I guess.
    What I've done so far:

    New intake gasket
    New plugs
    New Dist mag pickup
    New carb metering blocks
    New coil

    Still thinking prob is in carb somewhere.

    guess I'll check under valve cover on driver side as well.

     I just went back and read your complete thread, does not make any sense, but have you checked your fuel pump , low RPMS may not produce enough fuel pressure.  :2cents:

    yes, would have if I owned one.
    But even if I didn't, seems a person could dissasemble a card and determine what
    was wrong with it, which I have done. Tempted to send carb to Holley for an inspection.
    But I have had it completely apart.

    If I put #1 cylinder at TDC on the power stroke, where
    should my distributor rotor be pointing. Think I have about
    15 degrees initial timing set.

    Driver side valve train looks good.

    withdrew a gas sample, looks and smells good.

    gonna check timing by rotating engine to TDC and looking at markings on dampner.

    Here is what Holley is saying:

    Robert,
    Man you are having my luck. Its perplexing. As I read through your article you and everybody are asking the right questions. Now anytime you make changes to the carburetor does it make any difference on how it runs? Better or worse? Just a little bit? If its not the engine it would be the idle circit. All things you guys have already figured out. My guts still say transfer slots are uncovered. Normally the car will run solely off the idle fuel will exit below the throttle plate. At idle the transfer slot will be above the throttle plates and not emit gas or suck air. The pressure in the venture will equalize the psi in the slot. When the throttle is opened even slightly air rushes bast the transfer slot and pulls fuel out and into the engine. If your throttle plates are adjusted inproperly and allowing fuel to be pulled out of the transfer slots and air to enter the engine this would cause the problems you are having. It isa acceptable to have them uncovered a tiny bit. If the slot looks like a dot its ok. If you can visually see it’s a slot its to far.
    Best bet to save you some time and headache see if you can find a carburetor that you know is good. Swap it on and see what happens. At least then you can narrow it down A little. Did you ever do a compression test. A bad valve has caused this headache for me once before. Check the slots. Try a different carburetor. You have nearly replaced everything that maybe worn it sounds on the carburetor. So its either adjustment of engine.

    got new floatst in, and new needle/valve assemblies
    Carb is set up good I believe.
    Got gas in bowls, fuel pressure, still will not run.
    Now it is not firing. So since I got fuel and air,
    gonna start over again on the electrical system.
    Maybe something ain't grounded right.

    son of a gun, I have been doing all this replacing and rebuiding,
    and I just started electrical troubleshooting again, and my brand new MSD blaster
    coil I bought a month ago is testing bad!

    So, a bad coil is what I determined early on, and I replaced it, and
    turns out the new one was bad, and I did all kinds of other replacing
    and rebuilding for nothing.

    Moral of story, when get a new coil, test it before using it.
    supposed to be positive to tower, .7 ohms, and neg to tower 4700 ohms.
    I'm getting 25 ohms and 1200 ohms

     How is the spark output? Its unlikely that both the  primary and secondary sides of the same coil have shorted out in one month... Do you agree?

    I did the resistence test, which it failed, but first used the MSD test procedure to check out the ignition system.
    and it also pointed to the coil. Was getting no spark at my spark tester.
