Hole at bottom of block on 440
« on: August 21, 2016 - 09:10:28 PM »
On my 440, there is an unplugged hole on the bottom of the block. Passenger side, at the back of the oil pan. Newly built motor so when I filled with coolant it dumped out, I think from here. I'm guessing there should be a freeze plug here?

If it's the one on the pan rail it doesn't get plugged.... No plugs into the coolant in the rear of the block either.....Three core plugs on each side of the block, three in each cylinder head...  Have someone pour water while you verify it's coming from where you think it is... Cause there shouldn't be water there....

could it be the 1/4 inch pipe thread drain plugs near the core plugs? If it is threaded put a pipe plug in it.

This is the one I'm thinking Dave is talking about is the red arrow

The plug Jack is referring to is the blue arrow

The freeze plugs which could leak are the green arrows

I'm sure I didn't need to label the freeze plugs but I was on a roll....

Yup that's it. Thanks guys. After further inspection it isn't leaking from there as you guys assumed.

I'll have to grab a buddy and do some inspecting. Thanks as always

you could have a leak from the exhaust manifold studs at the rear that would run down the back of the block.

This is exactly why I love aluminum heads - none of that.

Yea I have aluminum heads so not that. It looks like it may be dripping from the front and running down the k frame and pooling up towards the back. Car is on jack stands so slightly tilted toward the rear.

I noticed coolant dripping from the bottom of the damper.

Being a small block guy, I'm not sure if this applies to a BB, but they used to have a weeping hole in the bottom of the water pump housing that if the seal was bad, would allow fluid past it and leak out there, which would piddle on the damper area. Something to consider and just my  :2cents: worth. Good luck.

Weep holes are common to visually all water pumps.... It allows water to escape from a leaking seal without washing the grease out of the bearings.... Cause a leak is bad but a seized pump is worse....

At 65 a weeping hole is a lot better than a seized pump, inconvenient but less pain full!
