Stupid

n recent reading, I’ve stumbled on a paper by Carlo M. Cipolla. An Italian, Cipolla taught economic history at the University of California at Berkeley, and proposed “The [Five] Basic Laws of Human Stupidity”:

1) Always and inevitably everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals in circulation.

2) The probability that a certain person will be stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person.

3) A stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person or to a group of persons while himself deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses.

4) Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals. In particular, non-stupid people constantly forget that at all times and places and under any circumstances to deal and/or associate with stupid people always turns out to be a costly mistake.

5) A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person.

Stupid is as stupid does.“Our daily life is mostly made of cases in which we lose money and/or time and/or energy and/or appetite, cheerfulness and good health because of the improbable action of some preposterous creature who has nothing to gain and indeed gains nothing from causing us embarrassment, difficulties or harm,” Cipolla wrote in the explanation of the 3rd law. “Nobody knows, understands or can possibly explain why that preposterous creature does what he does what he does*. In fact there is no explanation — or better, there is only one explanation: the person in question is stupid.”

The Fifth Law has a Corollary: A stupid person is more dangerous than a bandit. (Because a thief at least has motives, even if you don’t agree with them.)

   Ahhh, but this begs the question. How often is the non-stupid person perceived to be stupid when in the company of supposedly non-stupid persons discussing topics that non-stupid person 1 is not totally familiar with but is very passionate about.   :drunk:

Stupidity is completely relative to the group present and the circumstances involved. That said, IMO there are 2 forms of stupidity;

1. learned stupidity - this is stupidity that is relevant to the circumstances at hand. i.e. a farmer standing in a group is scientists. The farmer will most likely have any idea of what the scientists are/can discuss whereas the scientists have little understanding of what the farmer goes through and understands. The difference here is that the farmer will not pretend to understand whereas the scientists will act as they can relate.

2. natural stupidity - this is the proverbial "dumb as a box of wet hair" type person. In the car world, this person quickly identifies himself/herself by making completely disconnected statements such as when someone says their car is overheating, the natural stupid person asks if the air in the tires has been checked.

The problem is that at times both types are seen in the same person/people and that makes for someone who is "uber stupid"... unfortunately these people can and usually do in great numbers pro-create and in doing so further the line and bring into the world yet more of the same.

One of my favorite stickers - Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.   Super true here.

Yea, I have little time for naturally stupid people, mainly because they do not even try to overcome, rather they strive to bring those around them to the same level.

The above is just my opinion
Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.
