Getting Most HP/TQ Out Of Stock Appearing Engine
« on: August 26, 2016 - 01:40:24 PM »
Anyone here have experience with hopping up your engine while maintaining its stock appearance?  I'm thinking stock (or stock looking) intake, original HP exhaust manifolds, maybe a bigger carb that under the air cleaner looks stock enough, and then what can be done on the inside to squeeze another 100+ HP/TQ over the original output.  I would think a stroker would work here but would be limited a lot by how much air the 'stock' intake and exhaust manifolds can move.  Any point to major work on the heads or maybe just a gasket match?  Compression would help, but are there certain cams that work better for this kind of build?  Just curious how much go I could still get out of a 383 or 340 built like this while still appearing stock.  Any good books or article suggestions would be greatly appreciated as well.

Thanks, Jim

lots to do ,
Stroke the engine
Port the heads, intake & exhaust manifolds
 match the cam up
build for midrange tq & you will have a monster
This is what the fast racing is all about

Hi Chryco, Do you have a guestimate on what a 383-stroked to 489 might do HP & TQ wise?   Would the 440source CNC ported stealth heads (painted of course) I already have be too much of a mismatch?  Would porting the 906 heads be a better match?  I've still got all the original parts so now would be the time to make it 'original' if it's ever going to be.  Thanks, Jim

Well lots , I would build more conservative with 430 or 470 CI max , but I have built  a number of these & I have used stock heads as well , I would expect to see 375 ft lbs at the tires [500 range at the crank]on a Mustang dyno which sounds low , trust me it is not mustang dynos are very difficult to get a high # on .
From the point of view of flow the Stealths should win but using some tricks I have made Stock heads flow very well too , the advantage would be the closed chamber on the stealth heads & being alum you can run the compression in the 10.8:1 range .
At 500 CI you will need a lot of flow power band will peak around 5400 rpm which is great for a long life street engine with killer TQ

This is an example of fast racing [Factory Appearing Stock Tire] they have to appear stock , manifolds etc  & run through exhaust with factory tires  & running mid 10s to boot   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3qSTsoo_v8
Crazy tricks throughout the car though to get that performance out of them !

not much point in spending big bucks on aluminum heads if you are going to run a stock intake.
