What Next ?
« on: August 28, 2016 - 02:52:10 PM »
Ok . So here is my story . I just put in possi trac 3rd member , a set of cal trac traction bars . The wheel hop is gone but car burns out too much for racing . By the time I back pedel the other guy is gone . I have stock tire size wheels on it now P235/60R14 .I make about 430 horse . What tire should I be running ? Last time I raced I spun about 35 or 40 feet before hooking up . Will I have to replace the rims/ Will my stock rims fit . Will I need off set rims . I have a old set of L60's I'm going to try .My gears are 332 . Should I be thinking of going with 15 inch rims ?When I took off the other day it was sliding toward the ditch so I got out of it then when I got back into it , it went toward the other lane . How am I going to make it go straight ? Is tire size the problem ? Like wise I'd hate to much tire where the car doesn't take off fast . I beleave changing the tire diameter is kind of like changing gears . I would never have thought picking the right tire would be so hard . Thanks for any help in advance .

I think you need a wider stickier tire, not sure what is available in 14" may Need to go larger for tire options.  On my old truck it was day and night difference swapping to a better tire.  What are you currently running?  Just my input sure others will chime in.

big mistake
Once you are out of control be careful getting it back lifting completely is what puts most people in the ditch often upside down !! Roll out of the throttle slowly & gain control back as you have already found out .
There is nothing good available in a 14 " tire anymore in a muscle car profile unless you want a 22" od tuner tire
Iwould use Nitto 555 drag radials [Available from Discount tire Direct]  275 50 profile on a 15 " rim or better yet a 17" rim will give you a lot more options

At the track you need at least drag radials and good burnout to get them to hook properly - I run Mickey Thompson drag radials and have 620 / 620 and hook real well!!!!! On the street though - not a chance - it will just fry em and yes it can point ditch to ditch if allowed to. Keep in mind that the track as the added advantage of VHT to aid in traction control - haven't found any on the street though.

As for too much tire - don't think this is possible unless they are too tall. I run 28" tall on 15" X 10" - 5.0 backspace, but will move to 30" tall on a 5.5" BS next year but I have moved the leafs in 3/4". You will get away with a 275 60 - 15 on a 15 X 8 with a 4.5"BS with no issue on a stock car.

Wider tires and taller tires will both make a difference. More contact with the road from both moves. I went from a 215 to a 255 and the difference in grip was substantial. Do you have a sure grip rear end? I don't have a problem with fishtailing but you are making more HP than I am.

Car had on it radial  P235/60R14  . That tire is 25" tall by 8 " wide .

Just tried Bias L60/14 . That tire is 27 " tall by 10" wide .

The L60 fit well except I had to take the weight off the axle to get it in there .  The L60 is 2inches bigger around and 2 inches wider .

Just did 2 test runs .

1st car was still going sideways .

2nd run car slipped some but kept going straight  for the first time . :clapping:

So I,m looking for a street strip radial 27 inches around by 10 inches wide .

I just put a sure grip in .

I ordered Mickey Thompson's ET Street/ss p275/60 15 . I'm getting ready to order 2 15 inch rims . Does anyone here know the back off set . It should be 4 or 4 1/2 . I'm going out to remove my current rim and check that there is a 60 on there now . Even after I check it a second opinion is always helpful . Something about 2 heads are better then 1 , Just checked the ones on the car is 4 inches so that's what I ordered

new tires

The rim that is on the car now is 15 x 7 .

The tire is 27 inches tall x 10 inches wide .

The back space is 4inches on the 7 inch rim .

The new rim is 8 inches wide .

I hope I didn't screw up staying with 4 inches back space . $60.00 shipping each way if I have to return them .

The rim is wider but the tire is the same .

I'm hoping that if the back of the rim is in the same place the outside of the tire will be in the same place because the tire is still 10 inches wide .  :clueless:

Thanks for the help Chryco

no if the inside of the rim is in the same place  then the  outside of the rim will be 1/2" further outward & the tire will be 1/4" further out

How about this ?

The old rim is 7 inches , 10 inch tire means 1 1/2 bulge on each side of rim .

New rim is 8 inches wide meaning 1 inch bulge on each side of rim .

To keep the tire where it is would mean I should have got 4 1/2 inch off set ? The outside of the rim will be 1 inch further out minus 1/2 inch  bulge still leaves 1/2 inch .

Rims haven't shipped yet if I can catch them in the morning .

What do you think glad you're up chryco I have to decde first thing in the morning and try to change my order .

My new tire is the same size as the old one . I was told if the tires are the same size all I have to do is measure the back space on the rims on there now so that's what I did .However like Chryco said the new rim is 8 inches wide , meaning a extra inch on the outside of the rim . That means to keep the tire where it is I need a 4 1/2 off set .

I got hold of year one and stopped my order them ordered the right rims first thing today I owe you Chryco the freight for return and resend would have cost me about $125.00 . Wish I could buy you a coffee or something but panama is kind of far . At any rate Thank You and let me know if there is anything I can do for you . This tire thing is all new to me . .
