Too many variables , every engine is unique .
I have built B & RB strokers using every displacement & type of cylinder head available or so I thought ,
& now they have Promaxx & the new Trick flow heads which I have never used , each combo is different with different combustion volumes pistons & deck heights .
I have used mostly stock blocks but have built a few with the Max block too where the power would exceed the limitation of the stock block , nothing like using a block that can take over 2500 hp !!
I have built less small blocks , for the same $$ you can build a big block . I have tried less combos but 340/360 with ported 308 heads make serious power especially stroked to 408/412, I did a 360 W2 , it was silly & worth every penny , the engine had a lobe go flat & tried everything to blow it up rather than fix it , bent the con rods but it held together . I have never done an R3 build but would love to & stick it into a D50 !!
Cams are the biggest black hole , thousands of choices from hundreds of companies unique to every build , if you are lugging the engine on the highway using 3.23 gear & overdrive you need a totally different cam from an engine with a 3500 stall & 4.30 gears , compression affects everything too , low compression needs to build cyl pressure high compression with the same cam you could uncontrollable detonation & no top end power
I have used roots & centrifical blowers , all kinds of carbs & built EFI systems but I have yet to build a turbo engine , although that was the plan for the 71 Charger but I never had the funds to build it , it would have been 512 CI with twin turbos & EFI , what better car for room for intercoolers etc using a car with a 7' hood & almost 24 " between the rad & grille !!
I really need a new project but I cannot narrow down what I want to try next , thinking maybe a Cummins powered rat rod with twin turbo but I cannot see that being very comfortable , I am interested in building a 5.9 with 1600 ft lbs tq at the tires & no detonation problems though !! It really doesn't matter anyway as I am flat broke as usual .
Probably my best build was a 71 GTX 440 with an 8/71 blower , the whole car cost 15k to build & ran 10.2 @ 134 mph making close to 800 hp & it was reliable .
I gave the entire car scene up 5+ years ago for health & financial reasons . I have not touched a car or built even 1 engine in over 5 years now , except for the member cars at Carlisle , even though it is my passion . AT least I am not deathly sick 7 months / year here ! Apparently you cannot have it all just one or the other but never both .
