CHRYCO BUILD LIST FOR SMALL AND BIG BLOCK STROKERS
« on: August 29, 2016 - 01:24:33 AM »
I am really impressed with PC's knowledge of MOPARS and how to build them, after reading a sh!t ton of his suggestions on numerous posts asking the same questions over and over I think that he should start a post in each category big/small blocks on how to build a stroker motor for the least amount of money :thumbsup:I bet he could write each post with part numbers off the top of his head and where to source them.We as members have a great source of info in him and should be greatful that he loves to help out anyone! Thanks Neil  :wow:

Too many variables , every engine is unique .
I have built B & RB strokers using every displacement & type of cylinder head available or so I thought ,
& now they have Promaxx & the new Trick flow heads which I have never used , each combo is different with different combustion volumes pistons & deck heights .
I have used mostly stock blocks but have built a few with the Max block too where the power would exceed the limitation of the stock block , nothing like using a block that can take over 2500 hp !!
I have built less small blocks , for the same $$ you can build a big block . I have tried less combos but 340/360 with ported 308 heads make serious power especially stroked to 408/412, I did a 360 W2 , it was silly & worth every penny , the engine had a lobe go flat & tried everything to blow it up rather than fix it , bent the con rods but it held together . I have never done an R3 build but would love to & stick it into a D50 !!
Cams are the biggest black hole , thousands of choices from hundreds of companies unique to every build , if you are lugging the engine on the highway using 3.23 gear & overdrive you need a totally different cam from an engine with a 3500 stall & 4.30 gears , compression affects everything too , low compression needs to build cyl pressure high compression with the same cam you could uncontrollable detonation & no top end power
I have used roots & centrifical blowers , all kinds of carbs & built EFI systems but I have yet to build a turbo engine , although that was the plan for the 71 Charger but I never had the funds to build it , it would have been 512 CI with twin turbos & EFI , what better car for room for intercoolers etc using a car with a 7' hood & almost 24 " between the rad & grille !!
I really need a new project but I cannot narrow down what I want to try next , thinking maybe a Cummins powered rat rod with twin turbo but I cannot see that being very comfortable , I am interested in building a 5.9 with 1600 ft lbs tq at the tires & no detonation problems though !!  It really doesn't matter anyway as I am flat broke as usual .
Probably my best build was a 71 GTX 440 with an 8/71 blower , the whole car cost 15k to build & ran 10.2 @ 134 mph making close to 800 hp & it was reliable .

I gave the entire car scene up 5+ years ago for health & financial reasons . I have not touched a car or built even 1 engine in over 5 years now , except for the member cars at Carlisle , even though it is my passion . AT least I am not deathly sick 7 months / year here ! Apparently you cannot have it all just one or the other but never both .

I agree that there are endless combos but I am seeing more and more guys wanting a nice reliable stroker such as a 512 that will keep up to or blow away most of the new stuff! The most common wish list comboI hear are an auto with a decent street stall,3:55 gearing so they can tour and a hot engine that is reliable,I suppose even then the varying weights of diff cars could/would leave ya with numerous cam choices. Most guys I know want a quick street car that can take a beating at the track occasionally.Just for sh!ts and giggles what combo would you put together for a mostly street driven E-body as described above?

About $7k in parts.   TTI 1 7/8" ceramic with 3" h-pipe exhaust.

I just finished and fired my 512 build.  It's very similar to dfrazz with the following exceptions:

Pro Max aluminum heads (good quality and only $1200)
Lunati Voodoo Hydraulic Flat Tappet & Lifter Kit - Chrysler 361-440 Three Bolt 276/284 Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .513/.533
Holley dominator aluminum intake
PRW rocker arms
Quick Fuel 880 CFM Carb.
TTI polished ceramic headers
1970 Plymouth 'Cuda.  Matching numbers 440 U Code, 4 speed pistol grip, Rallye dash, AM 8 Track, Shaker hood, 15 inch rallye wheels, Dana 60 4.10, Super Track Pak.  One of 134 - 440 "U" coupes codes built in 1970 and one of 100 - 440 Super Track Paks built in 1970.

"usraptr" = United States raptor - bird of prey = United States Bald Eagle.  FYI, somebody else thought of it first so I had to drop the "O" in raptor.

Here is my 505 - no numbers except it plants you back in your seat. Very happy with this combo, runs amazing in every gear, and pulls as long as you want it to.
