Harmonic Balancer Seal Install Question
« on: August 30, 2016 - 04:42:09 PM »
Hi guys,

I'm going to be installing my Harmonic balancer on my 340 and wanted to know if I should lubricate the timing cover crank seal with heavy weight oil or even assembly lube?

I'm not going to be starting the engine for a couple of months and was thinking the thicker the lubricant on there the better to eliminate it from drying out.

 What are your thoughts?

 Thanks
 Dave

It's probably a good idea to have a little lube on it.  More importantly though, is how you install the timing cover.  Just start the timing cover bolts...don't tighten them.  While the cover is loose, install the harmonic balancer.  This way, the balancer will center the timing cover for you.  If you don't do it this way, it's possible that the seal won't be exactly centered on the balancer snout.  Once the balancer is on(or at least started far enough to center the seal) you can tighten the cover down.

I always lube them with bearing grease.
