Prw rockers install, trickflow powerport 240 heads, 440

Chryco et al, need some help here.  Got my prw rocker set (3344011) and installing on the 440 build with trick flow heads from my build thread. 

A number of questions to start -

1.  Why is there 4 extra long studs provided in the kit to mount the shaft?  The other studs seem fine if not a little short - see photo -





2. Seems that the pedestal in the head for the shaft is not machined enough on the ends to all me to properly center the rocker to valve stem - anyone seen this before?  Guess the use of these newer trickflow heads and prw is uncharted?  See photos





I think my only solution is to file or mill some material of the pedestal in the head?

3.  Is it okay for these rockers to rub up against the shaft pedestals in the head? Or should they have a space in between to act as a bushing?

4. Please confirm I'm looking for about .010 in side to side clearance?

The 4 longer studs are for factory iron heads. The #2 and #4 pedestals are drilled deeper for rocker shaft oiling on them. The TrickFlow heads have a redesigned oil passage to the #2 & #4  so the stud lengths would all be the same on all pedestals. I got my fasteners from ARP for this purpose. The rest do look a bit short. I would want them to be at least flush with the top of the nut IMO.
 I think you are in uncharted territory with the PRW/TRICKFLOW combo. Machine work on the pedestals or rocker arms would be necessary. There should be a spacer shim between the pedestal and rocker arm, centered on the valve and have the manufacturer's recommended side clearance. .010" sounds tight, but may be ok for stainless steel rockers. Check with the PRW on this.

Looks to me like you will need to machine the pedestal on the head to get the rocker centered. Also whats the clearance on the retainer to rocker look like? Hard to tell from a picture but it looks close? You might need to shim up the shaft to get where you need to be?  Where are you at? If your close to me you could bring them here and we could machine them as needed?  Looks like your going to need new studs for the shafts?

I think he's out the London area but stand to be corrected. If he is, Brad's made the best damn offer he'll get in a long while and the drive to Barrie isn't that far. Good luck!  :cheers:

Where to start basically I agree with all of the above
 Brad just wants to see the heads first hand & I need a picture of the combustion chamber side
 I would use a lash cap in there to give the valve tip both more protection & a larger surface area .
 Quick dix for the short studs is to use a 3/8" bolt instead . no way I would run them that short !
 You will need to narrow the pedestal on the head & I would add the thinnest steel shim between the rocker & pedestal & you need spacer or two on #6 intake rocker

hey guys, thanks for the quick responses.  I've got voice mails into Trick Flow and PRW to talk this through, just to get their input, waiting for them to call me back. I also called the machine shop here and they offered to help with machining the head bosses/pedestals at a reasonable price.  Also considering sending the PRW's back and trying Harland Sharp or Comp cams assemblies - just don't know if they'll have a problem as well, and they are a lot more expensive.  I called Mancini and they said when they sell the trick flow powerport heads they also sell the Harland Sharp SHPS70015K kit and they have not heard of issues.  I guess I'm the guinea pig for these trick flow heads and PRW :-)

If I stick with the PRW rockers, I'll chuck the studs and use all new grade 8 bolts and washers the right length to resolve that problem.  Will need to figure out the torque spec to use in that case with these alum heads - welcome input on that.

Makes total sense to have a small spacer between the boss and the rocker, I started that way because it felt right and then I ran into the clearance issue.  So if keep down this path, I'll consider that when deciding how much material to remove from the boss.

Brad - appreciate the offer to help with this, as Murray pointed out, I moved out east to Halifax so you're too far away for a weekend drive ;-)

Well I would use the PRW , the price difference will make up for the machining on the head pedestals
 I would also use bolts instead of studs , the tq is still 25 ft lbs , You do not want to oval the rockershaft & have a rocker sieze , I have seen the results of that , unbolt the manifold & carb & walk away ..... once the valve goes through the piston & or into the water jacket & the piston disintegrates & the rod windows the block you might be able to save 1 of the heads , the valve covers & dist at best .

ok guys, here's an update.  Never got a call back from PRW.  Talked to Trickflow and explained my problem, they recommended that I go with Harland Sharps S70015KE part number.  These are designed to fit the Trickflow and Edelbrock RPM heads.  Talked to the machine shop again, and walked through what we'd have to do - which is mill material from each of the rocker facing bosses - to make room for centering the rocker on the valve stem and room for a spacer between the boss and rocker.  Heads would have to be disassembled to do that - not the end of the world.  I'm not loving the idea of doing this on these brand new, expensive, heads.

So, with everything in mind, I'm boxing up the PRW set for return and have ordered S70015KE.  I'll update when these come in and I have them mocked up.  Sure hope they fit as they should.

Go to Moparts race section ANDYF has a lot of photos there of rockers mocked up on Trickflows. I think he went with HS in the end but I forget the whole story that went with it.

I guess I think differently , I would seal everything up in a bag except the 2 pedestals insert a bolt in the hole & use my die grinder to remove enough material & hand file it flat to get the extra space then shim it back to center the rocker . You do not have to trim a lot of material off the pedestal maybe .030
 I see Harlands alums rockers as a down grade from the stainless PRW

Btw, I've heard of folks having the PRW adjusters come loose on them.
