71' challenger, brakes for dummies
« on: September 02, 2016 - 08:05:50 PM »
I recently restored my 71 challenger 340 4b. i have a question about the brakes since i've replaced almost everything on them and still cant get pressure on the pedal. when i installed the m/c i did not bench bleed it, but i had the brakes flushed, still no pedal. i then replaced the brake booster. should i go back and bench bleed the m/c or is it too late? i also replaced front calipers, rear cylinders and all the flex hoses. killing me not to have my car on the road after all this work i've done, i'll post pics soon

"bench bleed" the master cylinder while it's in the car. Run lines from the master cylinder back into the top of the master cylinder and slower depress the brake pedal a couple of times to get the air out, re-connect the brake lines to the master cylinder.
Bleed the whole system again....

so the m/c does need to be bench bled even after the brake lines have been flushed and i've been trying to bleed the lines myself...?

You will never get a pedal if you don't bench bleed the master.    :2cents:

If a master cylinder ever becomes empty, it will need to be bleed :2cents:

Finally had a chnace to bench bleed the mc. Then i bled all the lines in the right order. Still unable to get a firm pedal. Is it possible for that much air to be in the lines? I bleed each line 8 times

Did you bleed RR,   LR,     RF,        LF         in that order  ??

Lotta folks are getting faulty rebuilt master cylinders, some trace their problem to the proportioning valve.
Mine wouldn't pump up until I got the rear drums adjusted properly http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=84903.msg849087#msg849087

Is there any test to check for faulty a master cylinder? And if it was the proportioning valve how would i go about checking that i dont notice any leaking from the valve. The drum r adjusted i double checked that

One time I was not paying attention and put the calipers on up-side  down (bleeders on bottom) OOPs. once I figured that out and swap t them around it bleed out and was fine.     :banghead:

Haha im sure my calipers r right side up. I found a trick on thw internet to get a proportioning valve unstuck. I wanna knownif anyone has ever accomplised this by olening the bleeders on the unstuck side and pressing brakes to release the differential in the proportioning valve? If icdo need to replace this part is it still called a proportioning valve if i have Rear drums with front discs? Or is it a combination valve?
