advice on stubborn lower ball joint?
« on: September 03, 2016 - 08:20:42 AM »
I am having a HELL of a time getting the lower bsall joint out. i'm converting to front disc set up and i have tried a pickle fork, a tool that i got a harbor freight that i broke, a hammer, a bigger hammer, pb blaster. i tried with the lower control arm supported with a jack (as suggested by a friend)...with no support from the jack (as a different friend suggested). the torsion bar is loose, but not removed. there is nothing attached to the ball joint, it is simply not coming off the lower control arm.
i have an actual person coming to help me, but once he's back from his vacation, I won't be around for a couple weeks and i just need to see some progress and feel like i'm just either missing a simple solution, or i'm just not hitting it hard enough!
any and all tips and advice welcome and sooooo appreciated.

You're pounding on the LCA around the stud of the ball joint correct ?
Try heat ?
I've taught you everything you know.....but I haven't taught you everything I know !

yes...around it, but after also hitting the stud a couple times  :-[ ...would that have caused some issues?
is it possible to hit it too hard & throw the control arm out of whack? should i have the lower control arm supported with a jack or just hanging free?

I would support it with something other than a jack, something more solid. Then some heat on the LCA. My T-bars was very stubborn, lots of violence needed.

And maybe spray some quick rust remover or similar and let it sit for a while first.

If you can find a 3 or 2 jaw puller that will also work. Worst case have lots of pressure applied to the puller and smack the side of the control arm socket with a BFH and it will pop.

Can you cram a picklefork in there and pry it off, otherwise heat and hammer.

I have a 5# sledge & I have a pickle fork. It's just not budging so I guess my impatience is getting the best of me.
...and I clearly need to work on my upper body strength!
Thanks for the input, as usual! :)
