340 or 440?
« on: June 22, 2005 - 06:49:00 PM »
Wasn't sure maybe this goes in the engine section.  :dontknow:
My '73 is # matching, plan was to store the #'s motor and go with a stroked 340 set-up. The one I was considering was rated up to 500-600 hp and streetable.
My last trip home I went over to check on my dad's Torino at the mechanic and he said he had just picked up a '69 440HP with performance heads(?) and Eidelbrock intake plus some other stuff.

So, the big Q is should I consider a 440 swap instead of the stroker 340?
I don't want to do anything to the car that could not be easily changed back if I were to fully restore it.
If I stick in a 440 would I have to do any cutting or will it slip right in?

Thanks
Jeff

Just new big block engine mounts. I'm also sure you may possibly need a Big block trans nell housing.  :???:

(How'd I do CP?)  :D

Oh, and DEFINITELY go for that 440 thats the BEST year!!!!!!!!!

Yup, figured I'd need a BB 727 and new mounts, as long as the 440 will slip in without cutting anything.
I realy liked the thought of the stroked 340, but I think I can get the hp out of the 440 cheaper? (is there anything cheap when it comes to Mopars?)
Looks like I need to talk to my mechanic.
I just foung out about a factory replacement Hemi that's still sitting at a dealership that was ordered for a planned swap into a '72 Charger that never happened.............Hmmmmmmmmm.  ::)

Depend on how far you want to go?  :dontknow:

Just a clean out with fresh new parts and a shave of the clyindas (0.10 over)

Or all out hp monster which by the sounds of it is the way you want to go.

$3,500 is a good ball park figure. Chryco will fill you in and you may also want to check the tech archieves forum as I'm sure there is a rebuild or engine mods and prices etc. Basically what you can get and for what price. Hope I'm help.  ;D

Yeah, I figured, your posts have so far to travel It's a wonder they aren't more garbled. Those trans continental internet lines can get crossed sometimes.   :eeksmall:
Thanks.
And yes, I would like to have a fairly hi output motor, but I still want to be able to drive it without twisting it in two........ that would suck.  :grinyes:

Burpin is going to rebuild his 340 soon. What set up were you looking at to get the 500 horses.

CHRYCO do you know of a hot setup that Burpin can copy for his 340. It will need to run off of pump gas and beable to handle A/C. And besides the monster torque and power nothing else really matters. Its not a daily driver.

Will that set up work with the 340. And burpin isnt use to RWHP terms. Tell it like the magazines would. How much HP that way.

over 400 gross HP in 70 terms , the 340 will be down on torque due to stroke or lack thereof

What compression was this set up. And if high compression would be beneficial to lower it to run blower.

right, but how much would I gain or lose by lowering it to run the blower. Burpin mainly just likes the look of the old type blower sticking out of the hood.

Just heard back on the 440:  long block(1969), 2 sets of extra heads(906 and magnum) and a Torker 440 intake.
$500
Trying to get whether it's an HP block or not.
$500 seem about right for what I'd be getting?
I trust the guy, he's pretty straight when it comes down to it, he's just a big Chebby guy.
I'm just not up on prices for 440's.  :dontknow:

Also, I just need to "crank up " the torsionbars to compensate for the extra weight of the 440?

the tortion bars are different.   I know someone who put a 440 in a scamp /6car the tortion bar snapped lucky for him it was sitting in the garage.

build the 360   and put the 340 decals on it.

Roots blowers suck  :ack:  its better to blow a carb than suck a carb. they do make blow through carbs now but there still ugly. unless you have air shocks, huge rubber out the side, and a 70's paint job.

Turbo-   they have rear mounted ones now. and prochargers/paxtons superchargers.

ok its a chevy site just look at the turbo set up/ and dont hit a bump.
