Hemi Under Glass plans, drawings do they exist?
« on: September 13, 2016 - 02:28:43 PM »
So in my crazy ideas I thought about the 65 Barracuda hemi under glass, and how cool it might be to do one with a Gen 3 hemi and make it a touring track car that turns. A light weight mid engine car might be cool but how'd they do it?

Is there anywhere on the internet that said how they mounted the motor and transmission?

That would be a fun car!!!  That is a really good idea.  Can it be done?  Transaxle or short drive shaft to an independent rear?  Fun stuff!!

I recall it uses the FWD trans from a Toronado.

I'm thinking a ZF transaxle from a pantera or Ford GT would be a nice way to go. I just have no idea how you would mount it to a gen 3 hemi. I'd even go as far to try and use a 3.6 pentastar with a pair of turbos to make it even lighter. The biggest problem would be the transaxle

Also, does anyone know how they worked on the engine while it was in the car? Did they hinge the rear glass somehow?

of course then the ZF is an IRS transaxle, so the entire rear upper / lower control arms and suspension would have to be custom fabricated. Not impossible but a challenge

just don't do this with it. it's painful to watch, but no serious injuries other than the car

I have an original article on the 65 somewhere. If my memory is correct the Hemi was connected to an upside down A833 then a driveshaft went to a V-drive out of a boat and then another driveshaft to a "normal" rear axle. I don't know if the axle was suspended by coils, leafs or just mounted solid to the frame. I imagine it was solid mounted or it would be pretty much impossible to control otherwise.

Why not go right to the source? Bob Riggle is alive and well living in Arizona. Look him up I'm sure he'd be willing to chat. I met him in my local area about 10 years ago and we had a very nice talk for almost 2 hours. What a neat experience that was. My last name is Reagle ,My dad's name was Bob ,I grew up in a 65 Barracuda and ALWAYS knew what the original Hemi Under Glass was. When I was a little kid I remember hearing them announce "Bob Riggle and the Hemi Under Glass coming to ***** Drag Strip". Sounded to me like they were talking about my Dad!!!  I told my story to Bob and then asked if he was looking for a protégé since he would probably have to retire someday. He grinned and asked "Would you consider changing the spelling of your last name?" It was a day I'll remember as long as I live.

yeah I saw that, what a horrible thing to happen and clearly operator error. I'm actually surprised the car held up as well as it did
