340 Windage Tray
« on: September 16, 2016 - 04:43:19 PM »
Aloha Gang,

When I bought my 340, the seller kept the pan and the pick-up (they were A-body). The seller pointed out the locations for the windage tray bolts. The plan was to use the windage tray off my 318 (70 Challenger), but after pulling my pan, I see my 318 does not have a windage tray.

I searched, but most windage related questions deal with big blocks. Did the 340 have a windage tray? I've ordered one from Jegs, but it is back ordered, and I don't want to leave the motor without a pan for much longer.

I don't think early to mid 70's small blocks came with them from the factory did they?  I know some of the late 70's-early 80's 318s and 360 did in the police cars.  There's no reason why you can't add one.

Thank you for the reply.

Hopefully Jegs ships it soon so I can properly store this motor.

Both of the 340's I have have the windage trays... a 70 engine and a 73 engine... the trays bolt to 4 main cap bolts (on # 2 and 4?) that a longer machined head and are drilled/tapped...

Didn't know 340s came with them.  I'm pretty sure the 318 4-barrels that were in the M-body police cars had them.

Before you install an oil pan, consider either:

1.  Have the stock pan welded with horizontal baffles (front, rear, sides) so to control/reduce oil starvation from hard acceleration, deceleration, cornering.

or

2.  Just buy and install the Milodon road race/touring oil pan (and the pick-up, as well as opt for their windage tray).

ALL small block pans were pathetic from the factory by NEVER having any oil control via baffles.
Autocross/road racers go in deeper... and come out harder!
