Mini Starter
« on: September 18, 2016 - 09:18:40 PM »
Have seen small block mini starters from $60 to $350.  What is a good one to buy.  I drive my car less that 20 times per year.  Thanks for your help.

Reasons to not use an OEM Mopar starter:

1. Because it's bigger.
2. Because it weighs more than the new ones.
3. Because I don't like the noise it makes vs. the newer one's.
4. Because I didn't know they had originally had high torque starters from the factory
5. Because anything the factory does, aftermarket companies can do better
6. Because nobody ever told me these original starters can go 100K miles from the factory.
7. Because nobody ever told me the original starters are actually really easy to re-build.
8. Because I'm using headers and the heat is so hot from them my starter is failing.

BTW,

I have a Hemi 440/6 OEM starter.
My engine puts out a ton of heat on a warm day. Even 100 degree day.

I'll be dead before it is.

I assume you are talking about the OEM Large starters not the Magnum mini starters , I have installed dozens of starters from the wreckers , change the 2 contact tabs under the ring contact , these contacts are available from any rebuilder for $5 & the minis last

Exactly,

There were actually 2 starters from Mopar back then.

Less windings: small block and /6.
More windings: Big Block's.

I still don't know what years and engines the bigger starters were used.

All I can say is they are very much worth keeping, re building if necessary and re using again.

Is there a good quality aftermarket mini starter ? One that you'll only have to install once ?

Do you have pictures of the tabs before and after the switch?

NO but if you remove the plate with 3 screws holding it on , under that is a contact ring & plunger that just pulls out & below that is the 2 contacts that just bolt in , that is the only part that seems to wear out

At the bottom of this link, you'll see a picture of the factory mini starter and the piece that needs to be removed.  You just remove the black plastic cover and two small nuts and the extension comes right off.  Some models also require a little grinding on big blocks.

http://www.moparts.org/Tech/Archive/elec/1.html

The Pre-magnum 360 roller block in my Dart had an extra boss right by the starter that needed to be removed for it to fit.(91 Dakota V6 starter)
