Six Pack carbs with inlet on driver side?
« on: September 22, 2016 - 04:29:11 AM »
I looked at my friends 440 Six Pack car yesterday and he had the fuel inlet on the driver side. Never seen this before. Took some pics as well.
Carbs partnr is 4783, 4782, 4783.

Can someone help him out and got some explanations?

think those are MOPAR carbs with Chevy try-power bowls.
GM carb bowls had the fuel inlet on DVR side.

I think there was an aftermarket set of Direct Connection carbs that were also like that....I know my one customer has them on his 71 Cuda I restored years ago...

Holley made those to work on older tri power GM cars ...
like old GTO's or the 348/409 etc...

or any other custom application

they have mechanical end carbs w/accelerator pumps..

They are Holley aftermarket built specifically for Mopars. They are manual secondary all with accelerator pumps. They work great but it gets busy on the driver side with linkage and fuel lines to contend with. They were available from Direct Connection in the old days. I`ve ran a few sets of them and they work great. They were run with progressive manual linkage with an eyelet mounted on the middle carb that slid along a rod connecting the end carbs which started opening the end carbs when the middle carb was about one third throttle.
I think the came out around 1970 because of all the problems with the original Six Pack carbs. I think the origins of the parts they used to brew these up went back to the tri power carbs Holley made for the FE Ford engines in the early 60`s.

I believe the drivers side bowls were designed for GM cars; however in the late 70's early 80's Direct Connection sourced them for the interest in 6 packs since Holley wasn't making the pass side bowls.

The Chevrolet bowls look like the Mopar bowls and the fuel lines go up at an angle just like the Mopars except on the wrong side. The Ford bowls have a totally different appearance and the fuel line goes in at the top of the bowl and parallel to the top surface of the carb. Have a look at the photo Alan posted, the bowls do not look anything like Chevrolet or stock Mopar 2300 carbs.

I had the same carbs on my 440 six pack in my old Challenger. Got tired of getting my a$$ beat any time the hood was open about "incorrect" carbs so I sold them and bought new Holleys that were "correct" it didn't run better just cost $1,500 to shut them up!!!

Just do a concours reference restoration on it, then you'll never want to take it out so no critics will see it!
Didn't the Mr Norms 6 pack Demons have the fuel lines on the drivers side?  I'm not sure, though I do know they didn't have the same carbs as the factory six pack cars.

For me, unless their name is on the title their opinion doesn't count, especially any negative opinions... Comments are appreciated as are constructive criticism, but complaining or hating is not
