340 heads rebuild or replace?
« on: September 24, 2016 - 02:17:24 PM »
Did a leak down test, a couple of exhaust are leaking at 86% & 88%, can hear the air leaking at the tailpipes.
Called a local machine shop in the Bay Area, 1k to 1.5k to rebuild heads. Bay Area prices can be higher than other parts of the country.
Edelbrock heads are about $1,800 for a pair. Just a cruiser, wondering what you guys thought or if I have other options?

Check out RHS heads (Indys) at Immengines.Com ready to bolt in. However they are closed chamber so you need to check if pistons are above deck. May need thicker gasket.

1.0-1.5k seems like a lot of money to rebuild a set of stock iron heads IMO. What are the casting numbers on them?

For that price I'd go with aluminum heads. Better performance and no more coolant water jackets to deal with.

:iagree:   :22yikes:   that's insane!  I'd get a second opinion from another shop if it was me.

$500 around here to rebuild a set of heads. If it's really going to cost that much, go with Edelbrock heads and sell yours to cover some of the cost.

I am calling around on Monday out in the valley area to see if I can get a better pricing on a valve job.
The place I called here is in Walnut Creek, Morgan's machine shop. 500 would be great.

Do not buy from Aerohead! I bought a set of their 318 heads and they ended up being complete junk. Tight valve guides, crappy valve job and one of the heads even had the oil feed hole to the rockers welded shut. Junk! I have two heavy paper weights sitting under my bench.

That's sucks! You can use the price as a guide, $700/pair rebuilt sounds right to me.

Try Carolina Engines:

Morgans in Walnut creek is one of the last speed shops around and pricey. Try Quality cylinder head in Pacheco/Concord. I took a 440 906 head in for repair and he recognized what it was as soon as he saw it. Roberto is his name and he has been doing head repair at least  30 years. 925 685 9381
