Northern California March 2017

Hey guys,

Pulled the trigger on some cheap airline tickets for California in March.
Last year when me and a buddy went to the south I got so many great tips here on Mopar related stuff along our route so I thought I'd give it a try again 😉

We'll be going to San Francisco early March and stay for 12 days. The idea is to pick up a rental car straight away after touching ground and go up to Sonoma/Napa (wife's idea) for a couple of days. After that we'll drive over to Reno/Sparks NV to do some shopping at Summit Racing, then down to Monterey/Big Sur for a couple of days and then go back up to SF where we'll stay until we fly back home.

So, any ideas on Mopar/old car related stuff that might be interesting along our route?

Following, I'll be in L.A and S.F now in late November, visiting relatives and friends, only car thing I planned is Pomona Dec 4th.

I did some web searches for car shows in March and it was pretty scarce.
A little early besides.

March can be an on and off rain season in N.CA. That can make it tough for Mopar activities.
Maybe Brian (if he's available) and I can take you for a ride in the cuda's towards Gilroy farm lands on a Saturday?

Great shopping in downtown Los Gatos for the Mrs. and family while we are away blasting down the roads.

Some places you might want to go visit when here:
17 mile drive/Pebble Beach
Downtown Carmel
Monterey Bay Aquarium
Monterey whale tours (prime time of year)
Stinson Beach
Mount Tamalpias
John Muir Woods
Alcatraz Island
Fisherman's Wharf
Half Moon Bay and Hwy 1 drive to SFO
Yosemite (this is a must see)

Unless theres something else in Reno that attracts you I'd continue to order online, a trip to the store isn't worth your limited time...

Tahoe is awesome, Reno.. Not so much...  As mentioned Monterey, Big Sur, maybe even take the drive down Hwy 1 to Hearst Castle, spend the night in Cambria, Moonstone  Landing is a nice place..... 

If you'd scheduled around a Mopar happening Spring Fling would have been a great choice but it'll be mid-late April... The former Mopars at the Strip, now Muscle cars at the strip is close to that time frame too....

Depending on the timing of your visit a stop in Famosa/Bakersfield for "The March Meet"  is March 2nd through the 5th...    http://www.famosoraceway.com/march-meet.htm

Skip all the tourist stuff, do a road trip up north to Cody's and check out the Taj Moparhal.

X2 what wild RT said. was going to suggest this drive from Monterey to cambria also.

 Stop by Sears Point ( I think it is call Sonoma Raceway now) if you are in Napa. Check out their website page to see what goes on at that time.

I may end up visiting nor cal again this coming March.

2 more places to check out.

Castle Rock Park.
This has a trail from there you can backpack to the ocean in 2 days.
Also a killer granite rock to free climb to the top. Must be somewhat experienced in free climbing to attempt this.
I did it when I was younger. Going up wasn't as scary, it was coming down that was.

Then there's Big Basin.
General Sherman is one of the oldest living things on the planet.
Walking by these Giant Sequoia's is amazing. Thinking back how old they are.

I visited Big Basin some 15-20 years ago when my brother was living in Santa Cruz, a truly spectacular place! My wife hasn't been there so that's definitely something we'll stop by when going north from Big Sur.

One quick question for the locals: Would you say that it's stupid to rent a convertible for driving around the Bay Area in early March? Never rented a car up there that early in the year before 😄
