Durango 5.7, good donor?
« on: October 05, 2016 - 10:15:21 AM »
Hey gang,
I'm looking to do a 5.7 swap into my '73 cuda and got a lead on a bargain-priced 5.7 out of a wrecked Durango.  Is a 2005 'truck motor' a good candidate in terms of fit, accessory location, oil pan, etc. or should I be looking for a car motor?  Thanks,
Bill

I used an 2004 5.7 from a durango. the oil pan will need to be changed to a Miloden pan, everything else on the front will fit with out any problem.

Sounds good, thanks for the reply!  Can you post a pic of engine bay?  I'm wondering how accessories are oriented.

I'm out of town for work until the 24th so I can't post any picks till I get home. if you look for the thread titled sheblbydogs 72 he has some photos of a challenger with the 5.7 truck engine in it.

Use the truck motor, the car block has the accessories mounted to low on the pass side and may hit the frame rail.

The car timing cover mounts the accessories low, the blocks are the same. There are no clearance issues with the car timing cover and accessories in an e-body.

I bought a truck motor and would not suggest it. By the time you buy a car timing cover, accessories, intake, fuel rail, etc...you might as well just went with a car engine to begin with. The oil pan won't do you much good unless you are planning on an aftermarket k-member.

Thanks for info, good to know that both car and truck donors are options.  There are pics of both truck and car 5.7's in e-bodies on Shelby Dogg's 72 cuda page (http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=33441.75 - great info there!), think I prefer the looks of the car-style arrangement.

Why didn't you use the truck stuff??? The truck motor works fine, its not necessary to switch.
and yes the oil pan wont work for either motor with a stock "K"

Truck motors made more power 05-08 hehe. In all seriousness, the truck intake kills the car intake, even on modded motors. 6.1 car is only good for a max ported, cammed, stroker, or supercharged builds.

I'd still have to look at it, at some point. This build is for road racing/autocross intent, a couple of horsepower won't make or break my lap times.

I would have to do some research before getting in a swirl over a blanket claim that the truck intake has more area under the curve for this specific cam/header application anyway. FWIW I am using a 5.7L car intake.

Well stock for stock the trucks from 05-08 5 more horsepower. and the 09 ups make 20 to 25 more out of the box, not sure if the car 5.7s have caught up yet. Cam specs are the same car to truck. There was some comparisons done where the car 5.7 and truck 5.7 it consists of cam upgrade and long tubes, and the truck intake trounced it handily for midrange torque and a few hp up top. Not trolling, you can look at the numbers advertised by dodge and see for yourself.
