Cutting consol 71 to 70
« on: October 07, 2016 - 02:23:36 PM »
Can a 71 and later center consol be made into a 70?
If the ashtray is removed and the top cut to 70 specs, will it look like a 70 or is the bottom different?

No

70 seat belt holders have webs inside that hold the seat belt ends at a slight angle.

Yea...the bottom is totally different...I guess if you just wanted a large hole to look the part it would work :2cents:

Along with the fact the ashtray cutout is larger in the short dimension than the seatbelt cutout....

I didn't know there was a difference between 70 and 71 consoles...I have a 70 in my 71 cuda. I thought that the seatbelt holders were a spot for an ashtray, but I was just missing the ashtray - so I ordered one. For a long time I thought they had sent me the wrong ashtray!  :roflsmiley: Now I have an ashtray if someone needs one - never been used!!

I thought the same, for 20 years! Looked at swap meets for an ashtray that would fit, never found one. (way before the internet).  :grinno:
It's a pretty ugly construction though, they could have done better.

Finally got around to taking these, a picture is worth a thousand words. As you can see it's not just a simple hole.
