Best choice to fix or repair dash pad on 70 Challenger

What is the best way of dealing with a cracked dash?  Just Dashes repair which is about $1,000, a cheap dash cap, repair myself with DIY kit or does someone make an affordable really nice re pop?

The ultimate fix is biting the bullet and replacing the dash.  Everything else is just putting a band-aid on it.

I think that also depends on the crack and condition of the dash though. For example I'm going to give one of the DIY kits a shot on mine since the only crack I have is a small on coming from the speaker cut out.

A dash cap is better than a cracked pad, but, in my case, it still didn't look good enough. I wasn't happy until I changed out the pad for a new one from Dave @Roseville. Expensive, but I'm glad I spent the $. Not sure if he still sells them. I think the variances in quality were driving him nutz.

Feel of dash cap is hard plastic and is not the same. You also see the cut out at the Vin no matter how good a job you do. I ripped mine out and replaced with a dash pad from Roseville. Grain is not perfect to original but very close. You need to see a cap close up if that works for you.

You can get a new steel dash pad from Dave at Roseville for less then what Just Dashes charges.  And David gets them from Allen (the guy that makes them) who does a better job then Just Dashes IMO.  Just dashes has good quality, but they don't look right and are to puffy.  The ones David gets are done are on original steel cores and have the right look.  And when you buy from someone like David (who buys a lot of them and gets the good ones) you know you'll be taken care of.

I think you have to call or email David as he doesn't put them on his site.

 :iagree:  Got mine a few years back from Dave. Yes it is expensive but its one of those " must have" items to me. You spend ( hopefully, if you actually drive your cars) a lot of time looking at this part, might as well be nice!

I had a dash cap and it was really nice.  I got a wild hair and bought a UR dash through Dave.
Dave did an awesome job, but after the 5th dash I settled and put it in.
I would never EVER recommend buying a UR dash without seeing it in person.
Quality control is non-existent and you're lucky to get 1 that has minimal issues.

Thanks Allan. Thinking about trying a DIY approach. These can be immensely rewarding or a total flop. It is tremendously rewarding when things work out and a total bummer when they don't. When I have to purchase a service, it may be necessary (because I am not capable) but ultimately leads to a good or great result.

I will jump in here; I was in the same place a few years ago. I thought that I could fix it to an acceptable level. I tried everything I could, bought several DIY kits, etc and the end result was slightly less bad than the cracks. I then bought a dash cap, the one I got did not have the VIN plate cut out (which was not normal). I have seen a number of dash caps and IMO they look ok (personal preference issue). In the end, a new dash pad is the only way to go if your car is of a level that it should have one.

Now, all that said after I bought my new dash pad, I did some research on covering dash pads after having seen one covered on a TV show. Turns out that there is a very thin vinyl/leather like material that can be glued and stretched to cover a bad pad, however you have to have the current pad flat and smooth or it will show through the covering. Find a upholstery guy/person, specifically one who does custom interiors and talk to them. I think it can be done, in fact I am very sure it can be done, but you have to find the right materials and technique.

Here's a pic of 1 spot on the "good" UR dash I settled on.
As mentioned, really inspect all the parting lines and AC vent openings.

Katfish, from your experience with 5 different dashes....
The flaws and errors, would you say they are visible by checking the dash in person before purchase? Or do you need to test fit the dash in the car? 
I am overseas so return-ship something that does not fit is not an option.

A search indicates that most common errors are AC vents and as the pic you posted.

They generally look ok from a distance or off the car.  I would definitely test fit before shipping overseas.
Mine looked great lying on the floor, in the car you can see the issues.
Don't get me wrong, it's not horrendous, but when you spend almost $1000 you expect a little better.
