transmission conversion (crank)

So i has been saving my nickels and dimes for a tremec conversion, but i recently heard that my crank might not work for a manual transmission (something to do with the hole on the back of the crank). I have a 75 or 76 360 LA in the car. I've tried to find anything about this on the net but have come up empty. does anyone here know anything about this?

The original style pilot bearing went in the bored & finished pocket in the back of the crank... If the crank wasn't destined for a M/T application it often didn't get machined fully... 

Theres a newer design bearing that works well to retrofit an unfinished crank, instead of going into the deep pocket it presses into the shallow pocket that centers the torque convertor....     Pt number Mopar P4876056AA Pilot Bearing

What about the depth of the pilot hole in the crank? Make sure it has been drilled deep enough to accept the tip of the input shaft. You don't want it to bottom out before the trans reaches the bellhousing.  :2cents:

If the pilot hole isn't deep enough the pilot area of the input shaft can be shortened since it's now supported closer to the clutch disc...

most newer transmissions (Tremec) don't have a long snout like the old 833s...   I;ve seen plenty of 833s with the snout circumsized with no ill effects...

Interesting info... as I, too, have had thoughts of possibly changing from my 727 to a manual (maybe the Passon 4-spd aluminum OD unit.. their 5-spd is taking forever to get done.. and that is  long-shot possibility)... or maybe just install the SS 4L60 4-spd automatic.
Autocross/road racers go in deeper... and come out harder!

The roller pilot bearing for the Tremec's is different from the mopar unit.  The mopar unit is for the 833's only.  The O.D. of the input shafts for the Ford based Tremec TKO 5 speed and the Chevy based T56 Magnum are different and have there own bearing.  If you need help with the Tremec stuff let me know.  I have the roller pilot pilot bearing for both for $50.00 shipped.
