Cutting aftermarket axle shafts good or bad?
« on: October 16, 2016 - 07:44:32 PM »
Just installed a 1967 B body 8 3/4 rear end under the wife's Challenger.

I discovered the aftermarket axle shafts were previously used with a spool and are 1/2" too long.

In discussing this with Dr. Diff he gave me the correct length for the axles and suggested just cutting the very end off the axles. The axles have 3 1/2" of splined area on the end so no resplining is needed.

In contacting a local rear end shop about cutting the axle shafts they told me cutting down the axle shafts was not recommended as they are hardened and it will weaken the axles.
In doing some research I'm finding the splined end of the axle shaft that goes into the differential is not a stress point as everything is splined together so cutting the very end of the axle shafts is not an issue?

Thanks for any opinions and/or suggestions.

The reason some aftermarket shafts have long splined areas is so they can be cut to length... That way one axle shaft fits many applications...  Cut it & don't look back....

I think the local shop misunderstood my request and thought I wanted the entire end of the axle shaft cut off and completely resplined which is why he had concerns of strength.

Do I need to try and bevel the axle shaft end once it gets cut to help it slide into the differential easier?

Anyone have any idea what brand axle shafts these are?

Thanks.

Its been my experience that they are only case hardened ( if at all) , so trimming off the end will not weaken it.
