ENGINE OVERHEATING DURING BREAK IN????
« on: October 17, 2016 - 02:22:32 PM »
:banghead:I have got my new 419 stroker engine on the run stand. running a MSD 6al2 box, 8388 rtr dist, mad atomic efi. 26" 4 core radiator from champion, dual electric fans. 180 deg thermostat. engine start nice and runs with about 12 degrees initial timing 37 all in at 2700 but runs about 10 min and starts to overheat. I shut it down around 110 to avoid any damage. Is it possible I have a timing issue causing her to get to hot? I am going to try a lower thermostat today, possibly order larger fans.  but I really don't want to kill it already. Any suggestions???

I assume you mean you shut it down at 210*??  Timing will cause some heat issues for sure, what are you using for cooling system?

If you are shutting down at 210, 210 is not hot for a fresh rebiuld

:iagree:      Fresh build, everything is tight.  I think 240 would be ok to go up to.    :2cents:

No vacuum leaks, running 2 680cfm fans plus a box fan. Yes I am shutting down at 110. You think I wold be ok 230 - 40? That sounds really high to me?

240 for modern engines with closed cooling systems is the norm. I've read some run 250/260. I would run it up and see if it goes past 220. If it stays there or under break her in.

I'd say you are fine up to 240 degrees F. Definitely put some fans in front of the motor to move air across the rad to help it cool down.

There will be more heat on first startup because of the friction of breaking in a motor. It's important to keep the motor running for about 20mins for a full break in and not do a bunch of start/stops.

Stopping a run should be done if there is something catastrophically wrong.

I'm begging to think I may have a fairly new Champion radiator for sale after reading this thread.

:swear: :swear: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: Well ran it again got up too 210, 215 220 230 240 radiator cap vented i shut it down. The radiator is flowing good i think i just need to upgrade the fans. they offer and upgrade from the 680 to 1350. hopefully that does the trick. it is a four core 26" rad so there is plenty of cooling surface just need more air. Or i am missing something

And it's running good ?   Nothing unusual like noise, etc ?  Sure your temp gauge is good ?
