71 cuda what are all theses Holes on my firewall for?
« on: October 23, 2016 - 08:31:15 AM »
I want to fill in "get rid of" the holes that don't belong on the car! I bought this car missing lots of parts and of coarse its be modified over the years! I circled three holes on the firewall Im not sure why they are there? Can you guys tell me what they are used for meaning factory correct holes, or do I need to get rid of them? FWIW its a 1971 340 ,shaker, 4spd  cuda  should also add that it was built 2/03/71

Save the bottom one, fill the top two.

Yes, Alan is right.  Leave the bottom hole and weld up the top two in the circle.  That orange photo of the firewall with everything marked out has made it's way around the internet a long time.  :)  That's my Hemi Cuda.  One hole was removed (photoshopped) from the photo.  Can anyone guess what hole was hidden?

You guys are the best! Big help!!  I"m welding them up now! Im assuming the two holes to the right are for the electronic ign bracket? It is a 340 4spd car so maybe it was factory electronic ign??
Also , on the second picture you added Cody My hole for the "dash mounted reverse light" was never drilled out. Harness and light are on the dash don't know where they must have snaked the harness through?. Fender tag and body numbers are all there saying 4spd car!!

1971 had a different location for the dash mounted reverse light. Cody picture is 1970 I believe.

Your 1971 hole will be 1" hole just above the gas pedal :2cents:

I don't think those two should be there,   :2cents:

The ECU bracket was added at some point during 1971 (If I remember correctly).  I think 340's were the first E-Body to get it.

I would measure the spacing to see if they are spaced for an ECU or the original mounting bracket. Worse case, you could fill them and redrill them later if needed?

I agree, check with the bracket first. Your middle circled hole could be the outer ECU bracket mounting hole.

Other wise the two holes would be correct for a 1971 340 with ECI

**** I had the 1" hole there and welded it up! I looked at the firewall picture and thought it was another added hole. Oh well! At least I didn't drill any holes..
Thanks Cody, Ill order that bracket!
I did read about the 340 4spd cars getting that bracket and electronic Ign. I don't think they have a "exact date " on that? They mentioned "late built 71's " I believe??
Thanks again Guy!!

It's easier to drill a hole then weld one up after paint  :2cents:

Here's a 1971 Firewall with the reverse light wire in place...
