71 Rallye dash ...Correct or not ?
« on: October 23, 2016 - 03:29:03 PM »
MY 71 Cuda' has a Rallye dash that I know is not original to the car, it is coded on the broadcast sheet for the standard gauge cluster. I'm debating if I want to restore it or put the car back to the original standard dash and my question is what is it really out of ? Through my research I see that 70-71 had the 8,000 RPM tachometer and trip odometer and clock set knob in the bezel housing. Mine has trip/clock knobs like the 72-74 style that go through the gauge but has the 8,000 RPM tach. The obvious answer is that someone just swapped out the tachometer and it's defiantly a 72-74 style, but could this be factory correct ? My car is a late April/early May 1971 build car and some things were transitioning to a 1972 model year could the Cuda' rallye dash be have been this way also and I just happen to have one?

Your assumption is correct....Some one put an eight grand tach in a newer dash.
That is completely wrong for your car.

Thanks Alan,
That made my decision easier, Ill sell this one and pick up a standard non-rallye style that is correct for my car and when It comes time to restore it. Any differences in the 70-74 non rallye gauge cluster ?

Didn't 71 have seat belt warning light on extreme right side ?

Could save you in shipping too, since I am two hours west of Pittsburgh I could meet you half way when the time comes. Akron is where I picked up my 340 at last year.

virtually every year was different subtly
we should have a clear guide but
70 had remote reset for the clock & trip with 8 k tach
I thought late 71 switched to reset through the face ?
there were differences in the lettering around the switches from year to year
72 up used the 7 k tach
74 had the seat belt warning on the far right
 What else ?

Actually the 1970 style with the resets going through the wood grain was used through 1971 and up until early 1972 models. :2cents:

Thanks for all the input. I was looking around the internet today and found this little bit of information from Performance Car Graphics...Thoughts ? Is this info accurate could I really have a later dash as indicated here or not. I guess I may have to pull out the cluster and look for some numbers and production build dates...

No, David is very wrong on that.  :nono:  There are several early examples of 1972 model year cars with 70-71 style dashes in them. I used to own one.
