Need new rear parking brake cables....what are you guys using?
« on: October 24, 2016 - 05:06:58 PM »
Need new rear parking brake cables on our 1971 Challenger.

My setup uses 2 rear cables, one cable per side, and the cables appear to be around 35 1/2" long.

I'm finding a number of different brands of rear cables from the more $$$ original type with correct sheathing to a more generic type that's cheaper.

I'm not overly concerned about being totally original looking but I do want cables that fit and work properly.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I buy "The Right Stuff" from Summit Racing, but you have to buy the whole set I believe. :2cents:

You might want to buy the whole set, unless the company can guarantee the rears are the exact same lenght as what you have now.

I'm going to measure my original cables again but I believe they are 35 1/2" just like these.

Make sure you measure the length of the outer jacket.  The inner cables(overall length) could measure the same, but if the outer jacket is longer, that will effectively make the cables too short once installed.  The inner cable AND the outer jacket need to be the same length as stock.

I ran into this exact issue with my 73.  I used one companies front and rear cables but their intermediate cable was too short.  The rear cables had a longer outer jacket they my original ones.  When you attach the front of the cable to the frame brackets, that puts the cable in more of an arch and pulls the inner cable end back too far.  I ended up buying a longer intermediate cable from another company so I could get everything hooked up.

I just measured the original ones.

I'm just under 35 1/2" total length of the cable and 23 1/2 for the housing/outer jacket.

I think I'm close enough in length to give the Raybestos ones from Summit Racing a try.

Summit Racing is 20 minutes from my work and if they don't fit I can easily return them.
