Shock nut
« on: October 27, 2016 - 05:47:39 PM »
Has anybody had the top rear shock nut get stripped onto the bolt? Any idea on how to get it off?

Not me thank goodnes... gonna be a SOB if so...  Strategy I've used successfully on occasion is to stick a flat blade screwdriver in between, in this case, the shock eyelet & the shock cross member to increase the tension so the nut can catch a thread.

You said bolt so I'm guessing your aware there needs to be a wrench on both ends to keep the bolt from spinning.  Tight quarters in the shock cross member area.. would be good to have an extra pair of hands to deal with....  :2cents:

:swear:  that sucks. why they didn't make covers in trunk to get to the top shock tower.
Hope your car is on a lift not laying on your back on floor,
jam a wrench on the bolt side and a long handle ratchet on nut to get loose.
you cannot leave ratchet on nut to remove it..

Torch it. Someone that knows what they're doing won't damage the crossmember.

I suppose the area is too tight to get a nut splitter on it?

On a 70 the access hole is above the nut, so you can look straight down at it.... Which means you can torch it from above... Huge benefit as opposed to a 71... Good man with a torch should have no problem.... But I would suggest getting the fuel tank outta there just cause explosions are such a PITA.. Ya know dealing with the Cops, ATF, FBI, Homeland Security...

Maybe from the top if it's a 70

Yeah, it's a 70. I'll probably just torch it this afternoon. This should turn out interesting. Haha

I cut the head off with a cut off wheel and just pulled the bolt through. I didn't trust myself with the torch lol

I had the same thing happen to me.  My mechanic pounded on an undersized socket onto the nut.  The nut backed right out.
