Fuel Gauge and low fuel indicator issues
« on: October 30, 2016 - 03:10:28 PM »
I have an issue that started some time back and has been bugging me ever since. My car is rally dash car with an Gran Coupe overhead console I added. Everything was added correctly, all OEM parts, overhead console, harness, etc and was working fine until one day I started it up and realized the low fuel indicator stays on and the fuel gauge reads about 1/4 tank too full. With full tank, the needle in the guage is buried to the right.

Because both issues occurred at the same time I am thinking they are related. Might this be faulty low fuel relay? All other guages seem to be functioning ok so I assume VR not part of it. Ideas on how to test and isolote the problem?

I have a similar (if not the same) issue with my 70 Challenger SE.

Also read a quarter tank when I ran out of gas once.

I've read that some have run a ground from the sending unit to the gauge (or mabe the LFE relay).

I've been meaning to try that.

Thanks for responding. I was hoping it wasn't the relay as they can be hard to find. I'll pull my dash out this week and check the ground. Also I'll dust off my manual and see if there's a procedure that might explain how to troubleshoot this condition.

You should take a resistance (ohm)reading at the sender and see what it says.

I think it's like between 9.5 ohms and 70 - 75 ohms. Empty to Full respectively.
