Cam suggestions for my 440
« on: November 02, 2016 - 06:24:50 AM »
Gday Guys,

My Story is

My current set up is

1965 440 block
.040 oversize pistons (not sure on Brand),  bores still in Very Good condition.
Pistons .100 down the Hole,
516 heads 2.14 intake 1.81 exhaust valves home ported
Approx 9.5 or 9.7 to 1 Comp ratio
Adjustable Valve Gear ductile iron
MSD pro Billit distributor
1 3/4 inch Hooker Pro comp (i think)
Twin 3 inch mandrel bend exhaust with x pipe
Factory 1970 Cast iron six pack intake and factory carbs
Hemi spline A833 4 speed with a centreforce clutch.
Posi 3.23 3rd member

It's only a weekender so I am not worried to much about drivability I just want it to go like **** off a shovel👍
It will only ever get 98 octane fuel too.

I have been looking at a lunati voodoo 702 or 703.  So what do you guys think? I am happy to hear any other cam suggestions or reccomendations.

Also should I try and get the comp up to 9.7 or should I leave it at 9.5
Will detonation be an issue since I don't have the advantage of quench?
Thanks for everyone's help
In getting me this far. 👍👍

Cheers
Angelo

Depending on how you look at it the good/bad news is unless those heads have been milled quite a bit you don't have 9.5+ C/R... Those pistons .100 in the hole and 516 heads which should be around 81cc chambers makes very close to a true 9-1 combo...  The 702 or 703 would both run well, depends on were you want the power.. With those 3.23's the 702 would probably be a better choice...

**** i though they were 76cc.  When my valves turn up i will get the heads throated and cc them then.  I think the 702 fits my build better but wondering if i can get away with the 703.  I do enjoy the sound of an aggressive cam.  Will there be an advantage trying to get the comp up to 9.5 with my current setup?

Personally I wouldn't chase that extra half point, think of it as a cushion so you'll be able to run 92 octane if needed... As I said either cam will work but I'd be surprised if the 703 would ET as well as the 702 with those 3.23's... With the slightly lower compression the 703 might bled to much cylinder pressure really softening the out of the hole throttle response...  But the exhaust note with the 703 will have more chop.. Your choice, better running/better sounding....

With pistons .100 down & no quench I would use the 702 cam over the 703 to help build compression , it should respond better

Sounds unanimous on the 702..  next question is I can get beehive stylle valve springs for $ 60 more from lunati.  Should I go beehive or the old school double springs.  I was going to get all the valves springs retainer and locks from lunati with what they recommend for the cam.  Is their gear any good?

I cc'd the heads with the old valves in it today and got 84cc.  With the new valves in i reckon you were spot on with the 81 cc.
