While I have my interior removed I was thinking to replace the round slap shift handle with a T handle. Can I swap the handles or does the shifter need replacing?

The shifter is different also. The T handle uses a rectangular shaft. The ball shifter uses a round shaft. The black plastic "slide" inside the chrome shifter plate will have a round or a rectangular hole in it depending on what shifter it's for.
