Muffler Placement
« on: November 07, 2016 - 02:52:48 PM »
I recently added a set of Flowmaster Series 40 mufflers to my 70 challenger exhaust and notice that these mufflers are large, considering the spaces where they reside- the small areas where the OEM mufflers/resonators went.
My question is, will I benefit or "lose" if I decide to move the mufflers to the back- where the factory heat shields are located- which would place them right before the exhaust pipes/ tips?

Does this do anything to the performance? What about the sound itself?

ThX

Most aftermarket exhaust systems like Summit, Magnaflow and TTI, put the mufflers in front of the rear end where the factory put the resonators.  They don't put anything at the back where the factory mufflers were.

Generally, the closer the muffler is to the manifolds/headers, the more raspy the exhaust sounds.  With mufflers at the back, the exhaust might be a little quieter and won't be so raspy.  The problem is that the mufflers you have now, probably won't fit next to the tank very well.  They are oval instead of round.  Why are you thinking about moving the mufflers?  Are the 40s too loud or do they drone?  You can add a small straight through design muffler at the back to tone down the noise.  Lots of people end up doing that.

I'm happy with the sound. They just seem like they "barely" fit where they are- which is where the OEM resonators would go- which is forward. I had thought about placing them where the round mufflers would be located, as there seems to be more room- and I have the OEM heat shields there, which I figured would help lower temperature.
If the sound gets a bit softer, i'm ok with that.

Classic Chambered Exhaust helped me out by designing a "resonator" that would fit beside the tank on my 70 Challenger that would work with the TTi 2.5" tail pipe and the aftermarket 2.5" R/T tip. This is a resonator so it would be loud.
I just cut the rear of the TTi tail pipe and then clamped his resonator right in place and it accepted the aftermarket R/T Challenger tips. This part number is #25-RES-SPE.
 Just a thought for you.

How loud would those be compared to the Flowmaster 40's I currently have- as I'm happy with the level I have and don't want it any louder. How much were those resonators?

Eric at Classic Chambered Exhaust (classicchambered@gmail.com) is a good guy to talk too. He builds exhaust systems and components. Eric may be able to help you out with your questions.

I use these resonators ($67 each) with a set of Hooker Max Flows (2.5" and TTi X-pipe). My exhaust is LOUD at WOT, so I would assume that running these by themselves would be very loud. Eric may have another solution for you when mounting something beside the tank. He is a Mopar guy too. At the time that I bought these resonators, I asked him if he had a larger diameter that he  could build, but he did not have the material at that time. If he could have built me a larger diameter at the same length, I would have just used a pair of the larger diameter and not the resonators and Max Flows combined.
