Position of Jackstands for winter storage
« on: November 09, 2016 - 12:54:57 PM »
Hello!

Just a simple question as to where to put the Jackstands front and back for your E body during winter storage?

Thank you very much!
Jon

Personally I'd move the jack stands (and everything else) further south....

But if thats not an option short rear stands under the axle & taller front stands under the frame close to the K member....

Fronts under the LCA's so the suspension doesn't hang down the entire winter.  :2cents:

Having seen to many jack stands slip when positioned on LCA's I never suggest that.... I understand the twisting of the bushing but dropping the car is much worse.....

If you are putting it in the air to unload tires, you might as well unload the suspension right along with it. Put stands under the sub-frames near the rear leaf hangers and the sub-frame near the front suspension.

Obsessive racers store their cars with the suspension drooped to unload springs and avoid rate loss and spring compression set.

If you're worried about the stands slipping off the LCA's, then just put wooden blocks under them...taller then the distance from the floor to the bottom of the LCA.  Jack the front up, shove the block in there and let the jack down.  You still keep the bushings in the neutral position and there is no risk of slipping off the stands.  You only need the tires off the ground.  1/4"-1/2" is fine.

I put my stands under the frame so the suspension does hang down the entire winter. Should equal out. It's compressed the entire summer.

Ha, ha: The worrier in me keeps them on the ground and the battery charged so if the house catches fire I can get the cars out right away. I had a tire go out of round once but it was 10 years old anyway so it was a non issue.

The bushings are in a neutral position at ride height. That's why you aren't supposed to tighten the nuts until the ride height is set. The bushings are being twisted with the suspension hanging. The life of the bushing could be shortened if they are left to hang.

Personally I have no need to store my car for winter, I might like to go for a drive... But if you must & the reason you want the car on jack stands is to prevent flat spotting your tires why not bolt on some junk rollers? That way you don't have to worry about damaging the bushings, you'll be able to roll the car out in the event of fire & it can't fall off jack stands if there are no jack stands...

Thanks all for the advice.  The car will be going in late Nov and be back on the road I'm thinking around March depending on the New England Winter. I'm going to pull a Columbo and ask one more question!  ;) I have rear air shock - wondering if I should let the air out or just leave as is?  I believe they are at approx. 90PSI right now. Thanks again!

Yes, you should let the air out.....and then take them off and throw them away.  They are very hard on the shock x-member.  If they have been on there for awhile, I wouldn't be surprised if the welds on the x-member have broken and pulled away from the frame.

Wow! Argentina is where you're at.

That has got to be some good sight seeing roads to cruise around in.

I understand the thinking, just don't think it actually makes a difference as far as storing the car. IMO.

As far as jacking up the car to place the jacks, I good with the front end of the car, jack goes under K member and I can place both car stands in the front.  The back end of the car  is another story to me. Where would be the optimum place to jack the back end to place the car stands? Thanks!
