383 magnum engine restoration roller cam question
« on: November 13, 2016 - 03:56:19 PM »
I plan to restore my 70 Dodge Challenger convertible which I have owned for 12 years and which has been driving in Europe since 1980.

My engine builder suggests for the 383 magnum engine a Hughes (3842BL3-10) hydraulic roller cam with 238/242 duration and .540/0.550 valve lift w/1.5 ratio. Engine would be 0.030 over bore with Edelbrock 75 cc aluminium heads and AVS 650 cfm carb. Exhaust and intake manifold are original. I am looking to get a nice cruiser, nice sound and reliability, but also with similar power than a 440cui.

It would help me a lot to hear your expert opinion on his cam choice for this set up.

Thank you.
Thomas

A 383 won't like that much duration... :2cents:

If you spend all you time at a track it might be Ok but you mention "I am looking to get a nice cruiser, nice sound and reliability"   Personally I wouldn't go bigger than

HUG SER2630BL3-10
BB HYD RLR CAM 226/230 -110ºLSA

And would lean toward...

HUG SER2226BL3-10
BB HYD RLR CAM 222/226 -110ºLSA
JS27N0B 70 Challenger R/T Convertible  FJ5 Sublime, Show Poodle w/90,000 miles since resto
WS27L8G 68 Coronet R/T Convertible  PP1 Bright Red, Project
RM21H9E 69 Road Runner Coupe R4 Performance Red, Sold...
5H21C  65 Falcon 2 dr Wagon... Dog Hauler...

I agree: It's a bit more radical than I would be comfortable with for comfortable street cruising.

stroke the engine and don't worry about the cam.

Got to agree here, that's what I'm planning to do with my 383 Roadrunner, either a 3.9"  stroker 450 or 4.00" 489 stroker, both at .030 over for bore.  Plus, I might look at a little larger carb than your 650 cfm unless peak HP isn't of interest at all. If you want to hang with 440's you're going to need something more than what you're looking at.  Back in the 1970's my 383 spanked mild to medium 440's because I was running a lot of compression with a BIG cam and lots of RPM with a 4.10 rear gear.  383's are under appreciated motors, glad you're not 'upgrading'  to a 440 or Hemi like most do.
