advice needed, a whats it worth question
« on: November 19, 2016 - 09:43:17 PM »
I have a whats it worth question for the board, I found a 1970 T/A Challenger for sale and went to look at it today. The car needs ALOT of metal work, and by a lot I mean it needs quarters, trunk lid trunk floor extensions drivers side inner fender floor pans and probably a roof skin, The fenders could possibly be salvaged, the rockers are good as well as the doors, all glass is there. non original ta block included also the ta hood.  I know its got a lot of issues but the only realistic way Im ever going to own a ta or aar is if its a project. Please let me know ball park what I should offer. Asking price is $8500 Clear title and he has the partial fender tag and the dash vin plate that matches the cowl and rad support, Thanks in advance, Larry

$5k........
I know it's hard to hear, but you'd be better off saving your money and buying a more complete car.
Unless you can do all the metal work yourself, you will have at least 3-5x more into the car than it's worth.

By chance did you get some pictures? Share the tag as well, as some options help the value, like hi impact paint. Auto/4spd also? Are any of the 6  pack stuff there beside the block. Heads/rockers/air cleaner are not cheap either. Is it a roller with k member and rear. Is there a TA power steering box? How about any interior parts, even if just some core seats helps get you closer to the $8500. Unless there is some major frame rust/damage, I am thinking even with the metal you say it needs, $8500 may not be too bad. I would think if you went and offered him $7k, he may take it.

You found an entire car for the asking price of the block and a hood.....In the time it took you to type out your question, the guy would have sold it for that price if advertised. I'd say go buy it tomorrow morning before it is gone.

Yeah: How much cheaper can a J-code be? It will cost more to restore than it will be worth but you know that already I'm sure. If you had to borrow money to buy a done car rather than restore this one when you have the cash you'll end up the same figuring in interest.

It is a roller, the only engine component is the block, no trans but is an auto car. b5 blue with blue interior, the dash is all there with gauges, it has the rear but I couldn't really see under the car how it was sitting, im really leaning toward buying it and yes I would be doing it myself, I figure it would be a good project to get my 10 year old son involved. My 74 is almost complete needing only a few items to finish so this could go in the garage or shed until I have all the sheet metal from AMD. It will probably need at least the rear driverside frame rail fixed or replaced, I could see through the trunk floor and the rail needs attention. Ill post some pix as I can.

I agree with Alan and Sheldon.....go now and make a deal with him before it's gone! I'm sure many of us put equal money into cars that aren't as rare or desirable as this one. I love the fact that it's B5 Blue.  :woohoo:

I do to, how ever , I think im going to hold off, I don't really have the storage and I was going to buy a pre fab shed to put it in but the timing is not just right. I will have myself a T/A or AAR one of these days! I can Send the gentleman's # to whoever wants it, Send me a pm and I will get back to you. The car is advertised so I don't think he would mind. as for the money, I know about that, I've dumped a lot into a 74 Rallye  :faint:

No more projects for me.....

I would like a shot at restoring it, so if anybody buys it....I'm ready to get her done !
With that purchase price you can buy it, have me restore it and still be under $80K USD.

Sounds like the one that was for sale at Carlisle - was there evidence of burnt orange paint in the very back?
