rear shocks
« on: November 23, 2016 - 05:59:29 AM »
I am working on a 1973 challenger and noticed that the rear shocks in the car are air shocks.  was that stock on the car ? and is there any reason when replacing them that I should go with air shock  or go with standard shock ? thanks

Not stock, usually they are masking worn out springs. They can damage the mounting crossmember as it was never designed to support the weight of the car. I had them in my car when I first got it  and quickly replaced them. ( and the springs)

The upper shock x-member isn't very strong.  It's only spot welded to the frame rails in a couple spots.  If a car has had air shocks for awhile, you'll see that the x-member breaks it's welds and separates from the frame.  The proper thing to do is replace the sagging springs and install a standard style shock.  A cheaper alternative to brand new springs, is adding an extra leaf to your existing spring pack.  The choice is up to you depending on your budget and mechanical ability.

Where are you located? I have a set of KYB that I took off last year to put Bilsteins on. If you're interested in them let me know.

KYB's suck (sorry Blown Motor but they do).  Go get a set of Bilsteins, best bang for your buck.  PST has them and has a sale on now.

Bilsteins are for sure better but you pay a lot for them.

I did the "addaleaf" and kyb's. which lifted the rear about 2". As for the shocks, I think they ride like a truck and don't really like them. Bilstiens are on the what's next list maybe over the winter
