You are correct, engines and steel wheel color changed during the 71 model year.  Engines changed from orange to blue.(not turquoise) Steel wheels changed from body color to black.

The engine color change took place at the end of March to the beginning of April 1971.  With an SPD of 118, your 340 should be painted orange.  Also, if your car was equipped with plain steel wheels, they should be body color.  The wheel color change happened at around the same time.

Also, have a look at the engine stamping on the block under the drivers side cylinder head.  It should be stamped with the assembly info from the plant it came from.

If you see GW340 stamped in that location, that means the engine was assembled at the "Windsor" engine plant.
If you see GM340 stamped in that location, that means the engine was assembled at the "Mound Road" engine plant.

From the available info right now, it looks like Windsor engines were painted orange.  Mound Road engines were painted blue.  340 assembly moved from Windsor to Mound Road between March and April of 1971.

If it's stamped GM, then I would question the 118 SPD.  When you said it has a 1/18/71 date, did you mean the SPD(scheduled production date) of the car or the casting date on the block?

If the block has a casting date of 1/18/71 that is just when the block was cast...not when the car was built.  What is the car's SPD?  You can find that on the fender tag or the door sticker. My guess is that it was built later on in the year.(end of March or later)

Since yours is stamped GM, it should be blue.  The color your engine is painted right now looks off.  I don't think that's corporate blue.

Your engine looks turquoise...it should be blue.  I like Plasti-kote 232 for Chrysler blue. :2cents:

Yes, any small block...318 or 340(360 in 74) should be blue after March of 1971.  Your car was built in June so blue is correct.
