What type of fastener is missing on my 71 Cuda ?
« on: December 11, 2016 - 11:07:52 AM »
I just had Rod @ SMS Restoration restore my Emergency Brake Pedal assembly, which turned out awesome BTW, But when I went to remove the bolt on the front mounting hole (marked with red Arrow) I noticed it wasn't attached to anything, once the E brake assembly was out of the way I noticed that there was a empty rectangular hole in the sheet metal but no attaching nut for the bolt. Before I put it back together can some one help me with telling me what type of fastener goes in the hole? Thank you in advance for any and all help.

That square hole should have a weld nut attached to it...

Thank you... I going to assume this style since I don't see any spot weld marks.

That may work but it's not what was there. Wild 1 posted a picture of what would have been there.

I'm more curious about the red spring that SMS used  :clueless: I've never seen them coloured before :dunno: The firewall gaskets should also be white not black :2cents:

Here is a picture of the assembly before I sent it out, Looks like the spring was Black.

I don't see the pictures, but I agree they should be black or natural....I've never seen red ones..... :dunno:

Like Alan said, the one I posted above is the correct part, but if you can get the caged nut mounted from the back side it should work fine....  I'd probably use a long bolt as a handle so you can do most of the work from the front side....

I would hold a regular nut in the hole and weld it in solid, then run a tap through the threads and voila  you're done !

Yeah but the nut has to be on the back side but access to weld the back side is virtually non-existent & welding on the front side your likely to tack into the threads.... Granted you mention running a tap but sometimes welding slag is so hard it breaks a tap....   That caged nut is an easy fix...

I ran into this issue.

Took a bolt, ran it thru the nut cage.

Opened up the hole a hair so weld had something to grab onto.

Used a weld magnet to position where I wanted it.

Sprayed the bolt with anti splatter slag.

One light tack each side.

Then tacked opposites.

Done!
